1. If you're looking at the Trash in the Dock, yes.
2. Yes, that's correct.
3. Yes, there is.
4. Each drive has its own individual Trash folder. The Trash icon in the Dock is a representation of their combined contents.
5. Yes, if the drive's connected.

As you suspected, the Trash in the Dock is an illusion created for you. It does indeed consist of all of the Trashes of all the attached drives AND Servers.
"Putting a file or Folder in the Trash" merely causes a change to its Directory entry (indicating that it is now in the Trash) on whatever Drive it resides on.
So if you empty the Trash, then connect an external drive that was left with files in its Trash, the WasteBasket in the Dock will show that there is now stuff in the Trash.Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.8), & Server, PPC, & AppleTalk Printers
