Thanks for this simlid, I'm going to try your steps and see if it helps.  I think the issue may be iCloud, as I am not having this issue with the other account on the same computer that is not using iCloud.

I don't have time to do all those steps now. Here is my crash info:

    Application Specific Information:

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** setObjectForKey: key cannot be nil'

    abort() called

terminating with uncaught exception of type NSException

I really don't want to redo all of my mail accounts... AGAIN. I'm hoping that Apple will have a hotfix for this ASAP since many people are having problems, and so many people already have a vendetta against Mail. I was so happy with Mavericks until this happened. Thanks for the diligent bug fixing! You people are just amazing.

Glad it worked for you Mr Sunshine and thanks for the courtersy of the points, it is appreciated.

For those of you where that terminal string didn't work, sorry about the delay to reply, I was away from my coumputer and unable to respond.

I am not sure exactly what may be the problem. But if it didn't work, the symptoms may be similar, but the cause is probably different. If you can post a crash/error log on here, we can take a look at it and if I can't figure it out, someone else may be able to.

After Mavericks upgrade I get the same Mail Upgrade Screen every time I open the program:

Hitting Continue button causes it to open but any ideas?

So I was having the same problem. However, I noticed that Mail would only close when I had all inboxes selected. If I just had one of the three inboxes selected seperately it would not crash. But one of the inboxes selected by itself would cause the app to crash. So I went into accounts and deleted this account that seemed to be causing the crash and then recreated it. Everything seems to be working fine now and I lost none of the mail in that account as it reloaded everything from the server. The "defaults delete com.apple.mail ColorQuoterColorList" fix also didn't seem to work for me.

Go into Terminal and type in the following:

This has solved my mail issue:. It is up and running now.

Try to repair disk permissions first.

If your mail is also on a server and provided that you have a backup of your rules, signatures, etc, you can try the following:

    go to ~/Library/Mail

Delete all contents of the Mail folder. Don't delete the Mail folder.

    Go to ~/Library/Preferences

    Delete the file com.apple.mail.plist

The above actions will delete all local mail and reset the app completely! If you don't have a backup of your mail don't follow these actions!

Similar issue with 10.9 and Mail 7.0:

I can Get mail and Send mail.  But if I try to read an email, or even preview it from the main screen, Mail crashes with an error message.  I have reported this to Apple.

The terminal command deleting the ColorQuoterColorList flle did not help me.

    CORRECTION A FEW MINUTES LATER:

I have not done anything else to my System, but now Mail is working normally.  I can read and preview emails, and send, receive and still also working normally.

Apparently the Terminal command given above may take a bit of time, or a relaunch of Mail to take effect.

    Good luck all.  YMMV.

    Any ideas?
