Thanks for the question. I understand you have some questions in relation to storage capacity on your iPad. The following article may help to answer your questions:
iPhone, iPad, and iPod: Understanding capacity

You can sync and download many different types of content on your device. Some types of content (such as music and videos) typically take more space than others (such as notes and books). The amount of space taken by an app depends on the app's purpose; complex or graphically intense apps usually take more space than simpler apps.
If your device is near its capacity, you can remove some of the less used content to make room for more.

View usage on iTunes
iTunes divides used content into categories indicated on the bottom of the screen when you have selected your device.
- Audio: Includes songs, audio podcasts, audiobooks, voice memos, and ringtones
- Video: Includes movies, music videos, and TV shows
- Photos: Includes Camera Roll contents, Photo Stream, and Photo Library
- Apps: Includes installed apps and their content
- Books
- Other: Everything else, such as contacts, calendars, messages, emails and their attachments, Safari Offline Reading List, settings, and other system resources.
You’ll want to take into consideration that the Usage screen may not reflect the entire total of capacity used. For example, the actual size of the iOS software and firmware, settings, and system resources, etc.

Jun 12, 2014 9:43 AM in response to matt00by seecut,I don't think that explanation works in my case. I only have 5G of space after adding all the space consumed by apps/pics/videos. I also have an iPhone (in addition to the IPAD mini) on the same Apple ID. The icloud settings mention a backup of 8G for the iPhone ..5+8=13G .. and that is how much memory the software claims I am using.
Could it be that te backup is consuming some space.
How do I eliminate that backup (without deleting it.. I am paying for iCloud storage after all).
H.
