Q: Mountain Lion keeps forgetting display arrangement

Hello,

I have a brand new 12-core Mac Pro using two ViewSonic VA2026W displays. Every time I shut down and start up my Mac after installing OSX 10.8, my display arrangement is reversed from how I had it set before shutting down. This happened once with the original install of 10.7, so I switched the cables around thinking I had put them in the wrong order, and it never happened again. It doesn't seem like I should have to switch the cables again just because it's a new OS. This problem never occurred on my older 6-core Mac Pro on 10.6.8 using the same exact displays.

I understand that I can go into the system preferences and change the arrangement back, but that becomes pretty annoying having to then drag windows back where they are supposed to be and resetting wallpaper. I saw something about how the OS might not be able to tell the difference between the two displays, but why would this just become a problem with 10.8? And please don't say I should purchase Apple displays, they are absurdly high-priced.

Thanks for any advice you can provide!

Sam

I'm very confident this will all be fixed in OS X Mavericks, which I hope comes out this month sometime.

    Just happened to me again...

Wierd though, I just went a couple weeks (ie a couple of restarts) without any issues.

But then I came into the room this morning, it had done something it has never done to be before. Usually it just flips the rows on me (as a refresh, I am 2 rows 3 colums, 6 in total on 2 5770's), but this time it not only did that but also screwed the colums up.

This is the way the setup SHOULD be:

    [1] [2] [3]

    [4] [5] [6]

Normaly, this is what happens on restart:

    [4] [5] [6]

    [1] [2] [3]

But today, this is what happened:

    [5] [6] [4]

    [2] [3] [1]

That has never happened to me before... And again, system prefrences thinks they are in the correct alignment.

And as a side rant, I am not liking the idea of not being able to span a window over multiple displays in Maverics... tisk tisk apple...

Same thing here, I just updated from 10.7 to 10.8 -- 3 monitors here. Center one is my main and 2 side monitors are extra.   When I start up my central monitor is on the far right, along with the dock. Display prefs only changes which screen the dock goes on... moving the monitors around in "arrangement" doesn't have any effect at all. The only fix is to unplug the computer for 30 seconds before turning it on, then it starts up OK.

Come on Apple, you have 2 days, 22 hours, and 17 minutes to fix this in 10.9...

Can you believe this BS!? I upgraded to Mavericks, not fresh install. Upon the first login screen everything was proper. After I put in a few passwords and let everything settle down, I powered down and restarted. Guess what?

FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! FFFFFFAIL!

All my monitors were de-arranged again. Seriously Apple? Well, I guess thanks for not charging me for this garbage Mavericks.

I guess I'm going to have to do a fresh install and see if that resolves the issue, but that'll be long time from now until I finish off some projects.

    Unreal!

Well after my fix of logging in as root and setting up my monitors its still working without a problem and it has also carried over into Mavericks. Hope you get it fixed soon. If you have not tried my suggestion from a while back look up my old post. It just worked for me, 6 monitors and no issues now.

[This post was intended as a reply to SpyderZ, though it's not being displayed in that indented manner that would make that obvious.]

Is it possible that it is indeed fixed in Mavericks, and that what you're seeing is everything sort of "reset" to defaults, and that once you enter your desired settings, they'll now stick?

I'm not saying this is definitely the case, but I'd consider that as a possibility and test it before doing a complete reinstall.

I reset PRAM and it came up perfect after that.

Shutdown powered off, came backup, everything was scrambled again.

    Shutdown without logging in.

Did another PRAM, came up proper.

Something is definitely messed up somewhere.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record......

Got a Mac Pro 2008 model with 2 x 5770 cards (Apple Ones) running 10.8.4 and 6 screens. Had this problem since I bought this unit about 8 months ago and been running latest release all through this period. Screen would lose settings after power off but also just on reboot. Complete PRAM zap, replaced CR2032 battery inside (just in case) worked through all discussed fixes. So reading the thread tonight it appears that our Admin users don't have the rights to change the setting perminantly. So.... I setup the root user account and then logged in, usual problem with screens all over the place. Reset them and then rebooted. All fixed! Have done this a few times now so not just a fluke. Will have to do a cold start and leave the unit off for a couple of days. Have a go and let me know if you also get the same results. Very interested as I was thinking it was my old hardware and it was going to get skipped and replaced with a 2010 12 core but I'm glad I haven't now as I would still have this issue!

Here is the link to setting up root. Usual caveats apply. With great power comes great responsibility Take care!

    MrBroons,

You sir, are my hero of the day.

This totally fixed me on Mavericks!

Powered down three times in a row and everything seems to be sticking now!

Have the best day possible! You rock!

No worries dude. I had the same problems and had fixed them (albeit not simply) but when I saw this thread going on and on I figured you had missed the post when I had sorted it.

Really glad to have helped someone else with this as it is so annoying I was going to give up on my Mac Pro so I know your pain!

Enjoy your new stable Mac Pro!

    @MrBroons

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but still have the problem. I enabled the root user and rearranged my displays, then turned off my Mac and started it again, the final result: everything is still messed up. I did the PRAM and SMC, but nothing works.

    Some tech infos:

    Operating System - Maverick

    Mac Pro 2009 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

    16 GB Ram 1066 MHz DDR3

    Two Displays

Two NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB cards (each connected to only one display)

Is there somethign else I have to do, do I forget something?

    Thanks in advance!
