Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Okay so picked my new rMBP up today at 11am (UK), took 11.5 hours to transfer all my data and guess what?

This is the new 2013 model released this week?

The display is Samsung LSN154YL01001? They're using the same display on the new model? Is it 13- or 15-inch?

    15" 2.3Ghz, 512SSD, 16GB RAM.

Copied and pasted from the terminal:

    LSN154YL01-A01

Oh and just to clarify the gradient is consistent from the top of the screen all the way to the bottom and is about a third of the way across the left handside.

Right, understood. Has the forum isolated the model of display that is least likely to have the problem? I am surprised that the macbook has this issues, given that the Chromebook Pixel, Toshiba Kirabook and Samsung Activbook 9 do not have the same issue even though they have higher resolution displays.

Bearing in mind Apple have now had nearly a year and a half to solve this issue with LG and Samsung!! Apple displays in my experience have always been stunning, I cannot understand why these are not.

And it gets even crazier than that, Chris: not only is it bizarre that Apple, one of the richest companies on earth, can't sell us decent looking displays, but when we take our p--s yellow display back to them and complain they will tell us that the yellow tint is normal. Or that some image retention is normal. Seriously? What computer does Tim Cook use? Does he use a 15" Retina MacBook Pro? Is his display all yellow and full of image retention?

Just to clarify, Tim  Chris: is your complaint the gradient or the yellow? If it was a consistent yellow all over the screen would you keep it?

Edit: And the creaking. My case creaks when you press down around the trackpad. I've been in 3 times for this. Still creaks.

I know it's unreal. Having paid £2,199 ($3,554.71) I expect the best machine possible and the very fact Apple is marketing the machine based on its display, it should be perfect.

I'm a designer and app developer and can't afford to have inconsistent colours across my display.

Just to clarify, Tim  Chris: is your complaint the gradient or the yellow? If it was a consistent yellow all over the screen would you keep it?

If it was consistent yellow and I could sort out the colour profiles I maybe able to deal with it, I'm not entirely sure but I couldn't see it being a huge problem. Then again I wouldn't want to have to change the profiles to such a degree I had to choose between blue or yellow!

Luckily I haven't had issues with the trackpad although I do use touch tap so rarely press down.

Try not to feel like a moron going back and forth to the Apple Store. Any genius that wants to make us feel like we’re being too picky needs a reality check. Apple is supposed to be all about selling us products that make us happy. If you’re not happy with it, take that sht back.

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of problems with image retention developed months later and many people were denied replacements because the image retention wasn't severe enough.

That really is awful. I went through three of the previous generation 13" models. I checked them right away, and luckily the image retention was apprent right from the start. The "geniuses" did give me a hard time, so eventually I just said F it and returned the 3rd one to wait for a refresh. God I hope my 13" arriving tomorrow doesn't have IR.

It looks like they're at least using a different iteration for the new model.  Its unfortunate that they're still pushing out defective units.  I can understand some IR units going out, but a gradient from left to right is simply unacceptable.  My 3rd display had that problem and it looked absolutely terrible.  There is hope. My 4th display is the SJA2 and it's perfect: no ghosting, gradients or yellow.

At least someone has one without issues, that's good to know I was starting to wonder if all the machines had these issues. That at least gives me some hope.

I'm off to the Apple Store in the next hour to get a replacement, I'll update once I return. As I mentioned earlier I intend to check it in the shop as I'm sick and tired of going in and out of town....hopefully I can walk away with one that looks as it should!!

The SJA2 displays are not all fault free unfortunately.

This Macbook Pro 15 Retina (bought Jan 2013) with SJA1 developed bad image persistence. Took it back to the genius bar, and the display was replaced with an SJA2 about 3 weeks ago.

Now, this SJA2 is not displaying image persistence yet, it did have a yellow tint which was corrected using a display calibrator (Xrite i1Display calibration hardware).

But... this new SJA2 has a non uniform gradient colour shift going from top left corner to bottom right corner. Top left is slightly pinker, and bottom left is slightly yellower. The SJA2 also has horizontal banding luminosity shifts from darker to lighter in horizontal "waves". It is noticeable on a solid grey or light coloured background colour. No hardware calibration is going to fix a non-uniform display.

Running a display uniformity report with the i1Display calibrator shows luminosity shifts of up to 20% on different parts of the screen.

So taking it back to the genius bar tomorrow... it's a pain having to travel back to the store several times, but this thing cost over £3K so it will keep going back until fixed.
