Q: Delete iMovie Events, Projects, Sharing after update iMovie 10.0?

After updating to iMovie 10.0 in Finder appears a 'iMovie-library' but the folders 'iMovie Events, Projects and Sharing' are still there too. These last folders are roughly same size as the new 'iMovie-library'. Can you delete these old folders? I could use the space!

I have already updated my old library.

Thanks in advance!

I updated to Mavericks and the new iMovie last night as well as I have always been an early adopter. Unfortunately this time, I think I was a little too quick.

From what I can tell, the new iMovie takes all old events and creates a new iMovie library. I believe if you wanted to, you could potentially revert back via time machine and grab the old imovie back and use the old events and projects folders? Can someone please confirm? I would like to do this.

After I did my upgrade, I was left with to iMovie events libraries. One was called iMovie events and the other imovie events 1. The second one is my old library that resides on my external thunderbolt drive where I would like to keep it. The iMovie theater folder was also added but inside the Movies folder on my internal drive. I don't want that either.

I usually adopt pretty quickly to iMovie changes but at this point it might have finally pushed me to Final Cut Pro X, to get back that iMovie linear "feel". I can't see anything at all anymore in the new iMovie that shows any time line and ease of use.

    Cheers

    This is helpful information.

But what about if you don't have enough room on an external hard drive for both the old iMovie 9 events and the new iMovie 10 library of the same size?  The existing events use up more than half the drive, so there's no room for an additional library of the same size as the events.

How do you create the iMovie library?  Even if you have two external hard drives (one for the old iMovie 9 events, and one for the new iMovie library)?

I ran into the same exact issue. I'm still trying to figure a bunch of stuff out, but one thing I did discover is that if you control-click or right-click the iMovie Events library from within iMovie, you can close that library, effectivaly eliminating it from your sidebar. Then you can delete that library entirely from your Movies folder on your internal drive if you wish. You can also rename the "iMovie Events 1" directly on your thunderbolt drive if you choose.

I also read that iMovie does take all old events and projects and creates a new Library file. But it keeps the old events and projects folders as well. The reason for this is in case you still want to use an older version of iMovie (when I upgraded it did not delete my old iMovie, it just put it inside a folder called "iMovie 9.0.9"). If you don't want to use the older version, you can delete the old events and projects folders once you've updated the libraries with iMovie 10.

I finally figured out a solution.  It's posted here https://discussions.apple.com/message/23491674#23491674

Updating to iMovie 10 doesn't actually take up any extra space.

Apple's done something strange here: it looks to the Finder as if the old iMovie Events and the new iMovie Libary are separate, and that the content has been duplicated. It looks this way to Time Machine too, which is why the backup size suddenly increases.

However, at least in my case, I've still got nearly as much spare space on my main drive and on an external drive as I did before upgrading to the new iMovie.

In short: the new iMovie Library doesn't take up any extra space, but backing it up does.

    Julie O-

i hope that apple wakes up to all the complaints about the clumsiness of IMovie. I too have the files on my local drive, that filled it up during the migration process. My libraries on separate external hard drives were for a reason so duplicating them on my local seems foolish.

Please Apple wake up and give some advise!
