The ringtone on my iphone 4S doesn't work. It vibrates but no sound, and it is turned on. What could be wrong please?

iPhone 4, iOS 6

Is this a ringtone you downloaded from iTunes, or one that came as a default on your phone??  Have you tried switching ringtones, and going into ringtone settings...  Tinkered with the volume??  Even if you have the ringtone on, if your volume is all the way down it wont ring.  Also trouble shoot by setting an alarm in the clock.  Even if your phone has all volume off, it will still alert.  If this is a ringtone you downloaded from a third pary website or created with an app, you very well may have gotten hacked, or downloaded a virus to your phone.

Not possible, unless the phone in question has been jailbroken. Even then, none of the malware for jailbroken iPhones comes in the form of ringtones.

To add to your other advice about switching ringtones, etc (which was good), I'd recommend trying a reset. Hold the home and sleep/wake buttons together for about 10 seconds, until the phone turns off. Then release them, and hold the sleep/wake button again until the Apple logo appears. This is the iPhone equivalent of a reboot.

    Tom,

There are THOUSANDS of websites that you can download free ringtones from... It's actually rather common...  you download the ringtone you want, it gets saved as a v-memo, and then you download a ringtone app that allows you to use your voice memos as a ringtone, and then BAM its saved to your phone as a ringtone, and also backed up tp your computer... just an fyi, not trying to be a "know-it-all" jerk like some people are here

Yes, but none of that makes it possible for such a ringtone to be malware. The iPhone prohibits all code from running unless it was downloaded from the App Store and is code signed by the developer. That makes it impossible to become infected with malware by just downloading a ringtone.

If you have jailbroken your phone, then you can download malicious apps, but that still doesn't mean that a ringtone could be malware. Maybe on another platform... I don't know all the details of security issues on Android or Windows Mobile, so it could be possible there for all I know.

Thanks for all your comments. I had not downloaded any ringtones, all was turned on, but no sound working and a solitary game going very slowly.... I have now rebooted thanks to Thomas, and it all works again. Cheers!

Thanks!!!  I keep forgetting that darn switch does so much.  I wish Apple would reduce its effects.  With iOS7, no sound was coming out at all and I was racking my brain trying to figure out why.  Problem solved.
