I really wonder if Apple will be applying the iMovie / Final Cut Pro X model and offer a professional-level office suite in 6-12 months.

The one factor that weighs in favor of this is the fact that Apple will probably lose a lot of business customers for its software with iWork '13.

That doesn't seem like a software market that Apple would abandon.  But maybe Apple has just decided to focus on light consumer use.

I would gladly pay $199 for a professional-level Pages update once every few years.  I've been using Pages all day long for 4 years and it's served me very, very well.  I was so happy to get away from Word.

    Hoping this isn't the end.

I use iWork much more on iOS, both iPhone and iPad, than on Mac OS X. I never fully trusted Pages for Mac OS X. Whether my usage is "serious" is a matter of definition. I use it to take notes - not to create elegant documents with beautiful design.

Then you will probably be happy with the update !

    Lucky you !

But 95% of persons on this thread seems to be Core Power Users using advanced functions of Pages (templates, headers, styling, …).

When one resale an update you expect a clear notification of missing features specially when there are more than 20+

The main focus for Pages is (or shall I say was) not to "take notes" but rather edit  / create complex documents with ease of use and stability. A lot of "ease" has been removed with this update with a very limited set of new features.

    "going back to Pages 4.3"

    Dear Tim,

I've been using Pages all day long in my business for 4 years and it's served me very, very well.  I was so happy to be able to use Apple products for word processing and spreadsheets.  But the massive changes and feature-removal of Pages 5 will force me to continue using Pages 4.3.

I think that iWork '13 will be a factor which does not encourage business customers to purchase Apple software and hardware.  That doesn't seem like a market Apple would abandon.  But maybe Apple has just decided to focus on light consumers?

I hope Apple will be applying the iMovie / Final Cut Pro X model and offer a professional-level office suite soon.

I would gladly pay $199 for a professional-level iWork update once every few years.

    Hoping this isn't the end.

    -56 at last count.

The biggest message from this to any business thinking of purchasing from Apple is:

"Don't implement Apple solutions. This is what will happen to you."

    ↪ Page numbering method changed

↪ Template file storage location moved …somewhere?

↪ AppleScript Library for Pages 5 has changed with many classes and commands removed which indicates how the feature lists have been slashed

↪ Character Styles are in the Text Inspector under Bold, Italic etc

↪ Tabbing within Table cells appears to be inconsistent, tabbing internally with numbers.

↪  Drag and Drop text only works with .txt files now

Oddly, Apple already do a decent app that could be made into a "Pages Pro" or 'iWork for Grown-ups" - it's iBooks Author. Plenty of room for improvement and inter-operability expansion, but I thought it quite decent for a version 1.

Ironically, compared to the competing products from Microsoft, iWork '09 and Pages 4.3 were widely considered the "lightweight" underdogs.  Now with all the features taken out, those dogs are even more underweight.

I admit that I personally am happy with this "update". They added phonetic guides and RTL language support, things I have been waiting for since 2005. This will make it more likely that I will use it more.

In the long list of removed functions, there is only one or two that affect me - none of them vital.

However, the fact that I am happy does of course not help anyone who has invested in the removed functionality. I am very surprised at the number of removed features. One would have thought Apple had learnt after all the bad feedback they got when they cancelled Hypercard, Appleworks and other widely used products in the past.

I had thought the same. With a few tweak iBooks Author could be a marvelous 'Pages Pro'. However, my fear is of something much more sinister. I fear this is the tip of the iceberg. This is the beginning of a philosophical shift at Apple.

We all remember the '1984' ad that started the Mac revolution, the Orwellian future, the 'Borg-like' one-mind mentality. How the individual triumphed by casting her hammer into Big Brother. Apple staked its claim on empowering the individual and their own creativity against the forces of evil that would turn us all into stone-like lemmings. This IS the DNA the Mac was founded on.

However, with the success of FaceBook, Twitter, Google, the dollar signs are once again pointing toward the Orwellian 'one-mind' future (to say nothing about the growing acceptibility of collecting data and spying). With Jobs gone, Cook and Ive are recharting the new minimalist, future of the 'collective'. This is their vision. It seems to me all the 'individualized' features had to be abandoned to implement the new iOS 'collective' experience - like the new US healthcare problems, the implementation of all these features were approaching a mathematical impossiblity in the face of this new 'collective,' 'collaborative' ideal. So, out they went.... and they can't come back without bloating the program and defying the new minimalist ideal.

I fear this is the end of Apple. The DNA has changed. HAL has taken over. They had to have known what they were doing. Like a sort of mental syndrome, the appeal of their dream future, along with the profit potential and gravitas from the iOS side, will turn Apple into the very Big Brother Jobs feared - those who do not share in this dream will be marginalized and pushed away. The future is the new Pages: cookie cutter and pretty.

I have to disagree in one point what people wrote here: textbox linking is still possible but it works not the same way as in Pages ’09.

Here's an article I wrote about textbox linking in Pages 5.0 (sorry: in German):

Peter, have you updated your list to take into account replies which mentioned certain features aren't missing after all? I haven't checked the whole thing but I noticed you didn't erase "Endnotes" from the "Removed" list even though PaulBee said they're not gone: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23478188#23478188.

to 'retrieve' Pages'09, goto applications (on Desktop or macbook). then goto applications & open iwork'09.

There you should find Page'09. The 'upgrade' to Pages5.0 did not disappear Iwork'09 on my macbook.

To be cautious, I transferred Pages5.0 into a non-applications folder to save it but render it inoperable.

Pages '09 should then become your default.

this method was covered in the disussion somewhere in the middle  before the issue became a polemic

Also, I may have missed it but I didn't see the changes in the style behavior that I mentioned (i.e. styles no longer include bullets).

    I'm trying to keep up.

I had amended that after that post. It appears that it works but is having problems with ordering, numbering and updating. I moved it to altered, "EndNote plugin is partially broken", but if it actually half fails, difficult to know which it should be.

    s_w_i_t_t_e_r_s

I saw that but am trying to get my head round the extent of the problem and have a closer look at what is happening tommorrow when I hopefully will get hands on. Till then I'll give it the benfit of the doubt.

Whilst I have editorialised in my other posts and you can see where my heart is, with this list I am treating it as I do my iWorkTipsnTricks forum. The reader is better served with facts that can speak for themselves.
