Q: iMovie 10 to 9 downgrade procedure

I've done a silly upgrade of my iMovie 9.0.4 to iMovie 10.0 and things didn't work well at all.

I've been asked if I wanted to convert my old event library and projects and I answered yes. Now in iMovie 10.0:

  • most of my 16:9 clips shooted with my old SD camcorder are 4:3
  • my old projects are in 16:9 but it's the 4:3 clips which are cut at the top and bottom to make them 16:9 (so the aspect ratio is wrong AND the image is cut)
  • my old projects are missing titles

Where can I find the procedure to downgrade to iMovie 9.0.4 ?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

You don't need to downgrade. iMovie '11 (version 9) is still available to use and can be found in the Applications folder. You can still open the original Events and Projects in iMovie '11 and edit as before.

When you update Events and Projects a copy is made and placed in a folder named iMovie Library. The original files are untouched.

    See these Apple articles:

Ok so here's what I've done to downgrade:

    • in my Movies folder I moved to the trash the following items:
      • iMovie Library
      • iMovie Theater
      • iMovie Library 1
    • in the Applications/iMovie 9.0.4 folder I copied over iMovie 9.0.4 to Applications folder

Then I started iMovie 9.0.4 and everything seems to be back.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the excellent tip about finding and using "old" iMovie '11!

Is it possible to upgrade projects and events on a case by case basis? When I first opened iMovie 10 it asked if I wanted to convert Events and Projects. I said yes. I have about 2TB of movies on a 3TB drive. At some point iMovie told me things were going pear shaped and I would be better of to quit iMovie, which I did. I'm assuming the process of batch converting everything caused my disk to run out of space. So a more gradual approach might be necessary....

    Hi Alan,

I looked at possibilities to import iMovie projects one by one in iMovie 10 but couldn't find anything.

My personal strategy is now simply to keep my old events and projects in iMovie '11 (9.0.4) and eventually to use the new iMovie 10 for making new projects.

I had problems with the new version, it removed all transitions in projects.  When I replaced them it would not allow me to make the length of a transistion more than 2 secs so i have reverted back to the previous version of imovie following you advice thanks

    Hi gollfjon,

I only noticed the titles were missing from imported project and you're saying it also affects transitions !

Looks like this migration feature of old iMovie '11 projects to iMovie 10 doesn't work at all...

So, here's my issue. I edited quite a bit today in iMovie 10.0. Can I take my edited project into iMove 9 and continue editing it there? I use iMovie for work and everything would be better if I can just finish up in the previous version. Is this possible?

I don't know what to advise, other than call Apple Support and see if they can help you.

I found working with the new version 10 to be very difficult since events are no longer listed by year and were in the same library as projects.  It was difficult finding anything.  The library included every photo and music sound track that was ever inserted in my projects.  Very strange.  Also the new version seems to be very slow in making edits and additons.  I give up.

I put version 9 back into applications and will be using it for now.  I am thankful that I did not delete my version 9 projects and events files.

Go to your applications folder. There should be a iMovie Purple icon which is the new unwanted one.

In the applicatons folder, there should also be a iMovie Folder.Click it.In the folder there should be the old iMovie version we all know and miss(one that is black and gold).

    Open it and voila!!

    Hope I helped..
