Relax and breathe. Realize KN6 is built for iOS 7 and nothing more. Serious presenters will stick with 5.3 and that's it. End of story. Apple clearly has no interest in serious presenting any more above middle school-style presentations.

    Sad but true.

Going from Snow Leopard to Lion broke so many of my Keynote and colleague's KN pressies, I have one laptop dedicated to just KN with SL OS and many others do too. Versioning was one thing that broke KN.

    Just don't upgrade.

QTZ files not supported anymore. I made a small .qtz file that creates a live clock when played (no internet needed ). Keynote treats it like a quicktime file; you just tell it to loop and it displays the current time. It worked great, has an alpha channel. and is a tiny file.

Now Quicktime 6 doesn't support these extensions anymore...

"Head under water, and they tell me to breathe easy for a while."

I suppose you can go Mavericks and stay with Keynote 5.3. You DO lose interactive QuickTimes (apparently), because it appears that's gone for anyone running Mavericks. Just when you think they've destroyed QuickTime as much as they possibly could...

I'm still running QuickTime 7 for when I need QuickTime to do QuickTime things. QuickTime X was a disgrace.

My colleagues running Windows will get better value from my dozens and dozens of iQTs than I will (if I ever go to Mavericks).

I'm guessing that additional features of Mavericks are things like: QuickTime 7 is no longer supported? And how long before Keynote 5.3 will no longer launch? Many apps died with the death of Rosetta. Apple wants everyone using the latest, whether or not it's the greatest.

And it seems they want the first preso you ever created to have been created with Keynote 6.

    Breathe easy, indeed.

To add to the list, the concept of Masters has been significantly diminished.

    You can no longer:

    - have builds in Master slides. Masters are supposed to be work saving templates that allow you to create a consistent look and feel for any given slide.  Builds/animations are no longer supported on masters, so any builds (i.e. bullet by bullet builds, etc) cannot come from masters.   To me this represents a fundamental shift from carefully crafted and honed masters to 'willy nilly' and needless duplication of work at the individual slide level.  A big step backwards.

    - drap and drop masters onto slides to force a master to slide inheritence. While you can still link masters to slides, the full-screen master OR slide modal view obscures the relationship between master and slide, making it harder to work with these overall.

To me it seems that a design decision at the software level was made to significantly diminish the importance of masters.  That's a real shame - some of us have labored intensely to create masters that contain a series of builds and animated sequences, and that work now is completely lost.

Other shortcomings are being highlighted by others, but this alone compels me to stay with 5.3.

I love what Apple is trying to do by making more iOS capable presentations, but we're losing an awful lot in the process.

I can drag and drop a .pdf no problem. Is this a specific type of PDF?

    I've upgraded.... my presentations destroyed!!!!!!!

Cannot forgive apple degrading Keynote functions. It's a good option to be able to discuss presentation and editing with others, BUT the designer of the keynote presentation takes priority.

I need to take my mac back to shop and revert back to mountain lion ASAP!

    Presentations next week

I've tried quite a few of my presentions by opening them with Keynote '09 (5.3), and they are in exactly the same shape as I had them before the upgrade.  You might try putting the OLD icon in the Dock and opening all your presentations with the old version --in my case, they all function just fine.  Hope this helps!

You also can't set a default build animation for slides - 5.3, you could add an animation to master slides and have it work for all your slides that used that master.

Already covered that one about five messages up in the thread.

    It's an incredible step backwards.

    No cell split available.

And, text direction in a table was not an option at all in all Keynotes. I really don't understand this.

This is a bug...Exporting one (1) slide to an image/jpg results in KN exporting ALL slides in the presentation. Ugh.

I definitely agree the customize toolbar is SORELY missed.  But I am really surprised by the amount of things missing that are listed in this thread.  Surprised because I'm a pretty experienced Keynote user (in fact I use it a lot for linear animation work) and I rarely, if ever, used most of the items being discussed.

The new Keynote is the inevitable leap Apple had to make to bring parity to the iOS and Mac OS worlds while also simplifying things for the masses.  Although I realize there are annoyances to this, it will certainly allow me to use Keynote on my iPad now which I couldn't before because they were just too different.

I suspect some features (like the customize toolbar, PLEASE?) options will return as they tweak the Mac version.  What is impressive about the new app shouldn't be dismissed:

    • Centered Canvas (HOORAY!)
    • The right panel is a much more elegant implementation of the inspector palette.  It does have TOO MANY drop downs and collapsed options, but it's cool once you get used to it.  (IF APPLE IS LISTENING HERE, please offer a mode where there are no drop downs/collapsed options... I honestly rather scrolling in the panel to get what I need rather than clicking).
    • In fact, there are things there I've never seen before... such as Illustrator like Pathfinder tools for combining shapes!
    • The new transitions and build in/outs are spectacular without being cheesy.
    • Even the build palette is an improvemen for complex animations.

What still missing? The NUMBER ONE thing this program has needed for a long time is a TIMELINE MODE for builds/aniamtions.  I love Keynote and was annoyed as much as the next guy it took so long to get an update.  But I am much happier with the things that are now there than what's missing.  Just a different observation I guess.
