Q: What has been lost in Numbers 3.0 upgrade?

Has anyone got a list of features that has been lost in the new version of Numbers?

I am aware (and disappointed) that the useful Categories feature has gone (I have requested this feature back on relevant Apple page). I think I also saw that Print view had disappeared.

What else has gone? I make extensive use of filtering and sorting - if those features have been watered down then I think I may not bother updataing.

Thanks in advance,

Simon.

Another penny forgot to throw in..

References now don’t follow sorted rows as they did before.

For most purposes that's an improvement, not a loss, I think. Simplifies a lot of formulas.

    SG

That's correct. Not all losses are bad ones. I suppose I should put an asterisk by that one.

    Jerry,

If you haven't already, don't forget to add to your list the removal of Insert>Date & Time.

    SG,

Done, along with a couple of other edits.

Here's the current list, with your changes...

      • Reorganize Panel gone, no multi-level sort.
      • Categories View gone
      • References now don’t follow sorted rows as they did before. This loss a PLUS.
      • Table Fills are not supported
      • German user can’t use decimal points from numeric keypad.
      • Split Cells is gone
      • Sheet View seems to be the only view available during editing. Page view only available in the Print dialog.
      • Page Headers and Footers are gone
      • Edit Toolbar (add, delete, rearrange tool icons) is gone.
      • Dates don’t display properly when used as X-Axis values - hope this is just a bug
      • Custom Formats gone
      • Ability to set page margins gone
      • Cell border custom line weight is sometimes lost when using Filter Rows
      • Ability to sort selected rows is gone
      • Can’t set Page Margins; they default to about 1” all around
      • Formula Bar is gone, replaced by a field at the bottom of the Numbers window in which the expression is displayed but can not be edited
      • Graphics Inspector no longer treats a Table as an Object that can be formatted by the Graphics Inspector tools. Or, looking at it from the Table perspective, there is no way to add Shadow effect to a Table’s outline.
      • Comments only display as Tool Tips now, can’t be static displays
      • Can’t open Numbers 08 documents
      • Option to set the behavior of the Return key while editing a cell is gone
      • Insert > Date and Time is gone

In my spreadsheet the continous numbering of pages is lost.

Each 'sheet' (now that's in form of tabs) has it's own numbers, that cannot be adjusted or continued from previous

I'm not sure I follow you. From what I've seen, Sheet 1 is followed by Sheet 2, and so forth. You get a new sheet, numbered sequentially, each time you press the + icon. If you don't like the Sheet 1 name, double-click it and edit.

    What am I missing?

I guess he means page numbering when printing. It is in no way adjustable. No alignment, font size or colour etc.

    Jerry,

Another item, I think (the list grows).

I don't see the removal of autofill (or whatever it is called) on your list. I don't use it much (the pop-up isn't that bad to enforce data integrity and in iOS is probably faster than typing) but have read threads today suggesting it's sorely missed by some users on the Mac.

I believe that was called: "Show Autocompletion List in Table Columns".

Is that the feature you have in mind?

    Jerry

To my list, I have added:

Show Autocompletion List in Table Columns is gone

Static Custom Alignment Guides are gone

I'm not sure what it's called. The way I understood it when I read it, when you're typing in values in a column, after you've typed some values in a few rows, the old Numbers would swiftly suggest a value after you type the first few letters.

Yes, the suggestion was in the form of a list of previously entered items in the same column.

CORRECTION:  I reported that my Numbers 2.3 in my Applications folder was wiped out after installing Numbers 3.0.  But is still there and working in the iWork '09 folder.

But I think Numbers 2.x was never even in the Applications folder to begin with and I was mistaken. (it was down one level deeper in the Applications/iWorks '09 folder the whole time - just activated after I purchased it.)

So nobody gets their Numbers 2.x wiped out as a result of installing Numbers 3.0.

Note, for the old Pages and Keynote in the iWorks '09 folder, I stilll get the Buy/Try dialog (but, as I mentioned in an earlier post, the App Store let me download the new iCloud-compatible versions of Pages and Works, along with Numbers 3, for free - even though I only purchased Numbers.)

The problem is that it deletes them when it opens a document, at least one that was in Pages.  I've gone back to the old iWork, too many downgrades for this to be useful.

Thank goodness they are still supporting the old iWork under Mavericks...

    Jerry,

Another one (I think) for your list:

Can't drag a csv file onto a sheet and create new table.

Can't drag a csv file into a cell in and existing table and fill in values in the table.

(Can, though, drag a csv file onto the icon on the dock and a new table in a new document is created, which can be cut and pasted over.)

    Discussion here.
