Q: Mail Upgrade message in Mavericks won't go away

Have upgraded from 10.8 to 10.9 Mavericks on my Macbook Pro, everything pretty much went fine, except for a problem with Mail.

Everytime I open it, I get the below screenshot, saying "Welcome to Mail. To use the new features in Mail, your Mail messages need to be downloaded to this computer...."

Welcome to Mail Mavericks Issue Upgrading.png

If I click continue, I get a "bing" sound and then my Mail opens up, but I get the same message each time I open Mail.

Annoying.

Sadly, this did not work for me.  I tried multiple times, each time waitin longer and longer between steps to give time for possible sync issues.

    Did you restart the Mac?

I tried the disable-enable emthod multiple times, without being successful. The next day it worked! The mac was powered off  -so it could be because of the reboot or the date.

    exact same prob as OP

Have tried all methods above (enable/disable accounts, reboots, deleting all in mail folder, recreating accounts, repair file sys, etc) and still got same problem - Welcome dialogue always appears, continue gets a ping and mail opens and works - but mail always hangs on quit and i have to force quit every time

i have both gmail and icloud accounts in mail

    any other suggestions please?

i have 2 login accounts on this mac - this problem only affects the admin account, the normal user account upgraded fine and mail is working perfectly, go figure

the admin account with mail probs also has several other icloud account related issues since upgrading to Mav

desperately trying to avoid having to dump my ML clone back onto mac and do whole upgrade to Mav again...

update:  suddenly errors have stopped! - no more Welcome dialogue, no more Force Quit needed

have no idea what fixed it. just opened and closed mail several times with all accounts disabled (no machine reboots) and then enabled accounts and errors disappeared.

now just have to fix icloud mail drafts on my iphone suddenly not syncing to OSX Mail or to the icloud website Mail...

I had to make sure ALL my mail accounts (I had some icould accounts that have been inactive for a while) were active, launch mail, use connection docotor and clean up all stale SMTP login issues. Once I did that I quite mail, relaunced and all was good.

After a loooong time, the database rebuilding finished, and things are mostly normal, with two exceptions:

    • I have to re-enter the iCloud password every time the app launches, on all three of my Mavericks machines.
    • The red number badges for unread mail (along with the count for some unread Smart folders), seems slow to update. Not a functional problem, but disconcerting. It may not be anything more than how Mavericks "saves up" operations to do them all together.

in Mail try changing the Authentication method for each icloud account to 'apple token'

this setting can be found at Preferences>Accounts>Advanced tab of each account

this worked for me - no more logging into icloud every time Mail opened.  When i upgraded to Mavericks Mail suddenly switched the Authentication method to requiring a password but wouldn't save the password on the account information tab - very frustrating. bit of trial and error and found setting to apple token worked - so i don't know if thats officially how its supposed to be set, but its working

None of this has worked for me. I just keep getting the annoyance panel. Doesn't happen on my MBPro, just on the (newer) 27" iMac. Driving me nuts.
