Oct 23, 2013 12:07 PM in response to 000FFFby raucous,I have the same issue.. I cant seem to find the alerts preference that used to be there for each buddy. It was so so handy. I even had an apple script attached to notify me of certain contacts coming online through prowl. None of that appears to be possible now
Any one have any idea if all of this has been removed from iMessages in Mavericks?

Aug 16, 2016 5:03 PM in response to 000FFFby Ralph Johns (UK),★HelpfulHi,
The Messages > Preferences > Alerts has disappeared.
The only option left is to play a Message Received sound and it is set in the General Section of the Preferences.
Also any AppleScripts you had in ~/Library/Scripts/Messages no longer are accessible either.

Aug 16, 2016 5:03 PM in response to Ralph Johns (UK)by raucous,★HelpfulHi Ralph
Thats really disappointing to hear. I have no idea why they decided to remove such a useful tool.
000FFF - I have found an alternative solution at least for jabber contacts (facebook etc) and that is to use pidgin. This is a little more complicated to set up but seems to work and also works through growl and prowl. All contacts have alerts that are customisable for different events so it is possible to retain the notifications although it would mean having an extra app open.
I really hope apple return the functionality to iMessages but at least there is an alternative for now.

Oct 25, 2013 12:18 PM in response to raucousby Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
I must admit to always using the different Sounds and also setting ones up for specific Buddies.
My Video Invite alert sound was a short section from a Jimi Hendrix song. (nice and loud in case I was not near the computer).
Strangely the sounds are all still in the app and the Video Invite has reverted to playing the Ringer one.
(you could substitute the Audio file you want for the named item and drag it to the Application - i.e I would call the Hendrix item "Ringer" and replace that for the one in the app)

Oct 31, 2013 3:49 AM in response to 000FFFby NFDExtreme,Is this a bug, or have they removed this really useful and important feature? Any help on this? I've missed some very important conversations because I was away from the computer and didn't get an audio notification when a new buddy came online. I rely on that!

ApplicationsHi,
It is not a bug.
It is the new way it functions a ver 8.0

I use this page as Messages is built on the iChat engine.
You have to add your specs to the free text area. (the iChat Version drop down does not even include version 6)

Oct 31, 2013 8:23 PM in response to Ralph Johns (UK)by Lion82,This is just typical of the dumb decisions Apple makes now, why would they think users would not want to customise sounds and notifications like that, why not just have a button that lets people turn off things they don't want rather than assuming they dont want and not putting it on.

Nov 1, 2013 12:13 PM in response to NFDExtremeby k1tsunemimi,All of the previous functionality is still possible (maybe), but it is way more complicated to set up. You now get only one applescript file, and it has to respond to every event. It seems a long way to go just to make it beep on buddy available.
on buddy became available with eventDescription
beep
end buddy became available
The mic mute button is gone in Jabber voice chat. I do not see a replacement. The help doc shows it there, but it has been replaced with a list of other jabber buddies.
