Q: App Store and Updates not loading in Mavericks

Hi there,

Upgraded my imac to Mavericks and all was well.  Then there were some updates for my Aperture, iPhoto and iMovie (all previously purchased as full copies).  Something went wrong to my internet connection during the updates and the app store repeatedly asked for my Id and password, which I entered.

The downloads finally completed and the apps seem to work ok.

The problem arose when i went back to the app store and it would not open the application.  The toolbar for the app store appears but the appstore software doesnt.  No can not log in to app store to check updates and will not allow to check for updates from the Software Update option at the Apple logo.

Tried to restore from Time Machine but will not all it saying it needs the files for OSX.  Whats going on?

How can I restore the appstore, OSX and not lose my data - this is a family Mac and all our photos of our children and family are on it!

Any help really appreciated.

Try a couple of things, first restart in Safe Mode and test. If you have never restarted in Safe Mode, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot and test. If this does not work restart in the Recovery Partition and re-install OS X.

If you continue to have problems with the App Store you might try this:

1 - enable the Debug menu in App Store:

        • open the Terminal application.

        • copy the command below and paste into the Terminal window:

defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true

    followed by Enter.

        • launch App Store, login.

2 - select the Debug ➙ Reset Application option:

    3 - try again.

    Hi there,

Thanks for that, I tried it and it didn't work...fingers crossed the reinstall of OSX will fix it. It's my only hope.

    Morning folks,

After letting the Mac reinstall Mavericks overnight, it appears that the AppStore is still broken!

    Really confused now!

    Hi there,

I have done a reinstall of OSx from the partition but the problem is still there.

The AppStore toolbar appears as if it's loaded and no AppStore.  Can't upgrade or reinstall anything.

Can the AppStore be installed separately?

Help! My lovely mac is messed up now!

    Thanks in advance.

You may have a corrupt download of Mavericks or some other issue. I'd recommend either calling AppleCare for support or taking the machine into an Apple Store and having them re-download OS X for you. However if those are not convenient, backup then use Internet recovery to re-download. You can learn about Internet Recovery at

If the "Install OS X Mavericks" app is still in your Applications folder, delete it or move it somewhere else, then re-run the App Store app and you should now see any updates available.

Thank you all for the advice! Much appreciated!

Have rolled back and reinstalled Mavericks - all seems fine now - note to all: do not try to update several apps at once, this seems to be what caused the problem in the first instance.

Hopefully all will be smooth from here.

    Thanks all!

I'm finding that I can't run the App Store app under Mavericks if I have dual displays, and it's somewhat unstable even with just the laptop's display active (downloaded the pending updates but then wedged so I had to physically power off the laptop, as logouts and shutdowns hung).

Running from command line gives an immediate Terminated: 15 error.  Console is highly unenlightening.

I'm hoping that I had automatic updates checked, AND that works, AND there will be an automatic update that fixes this....

I'm not willing to reinstall for this.

    Dear Old Toad,

    OK. Followed the steps. Thanks.

But it did NOT get rid of my seemingly permanent Pages update notification.

    Now...

how do I get RID of the Debug menu in AppStore? What's the command line for that, please!
