Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Regarding the results of calibration outputs. I've had two Spyder calibration devices over the years, and they both messed up my display, so no longer using them, perhaps I was unlucky. IMO Worth spending a little more if you're creating work for professional use on websites and printing.

    Hi tkxdev,

Would you mind posting the results of the terminal command so that we all know which Samsung Screen part you have.

I may be wrong but it looks like there is a new part for the Samsung Screen in the recent rMBP refresh.  Thanks.

They were all the SJA1 versions.  I stopped going when I made the decision to wait for the Haswell computer.

Okay so I went to the Apple Store and said I wanted a replacement which they did. Opened it up in the store, quickly set up an account and still the same problem. Handed it back, said I wanted another one which they did...BUT...they said they are running out of this model so wouldn't be able to offer another until a new delivery came in. I said I would take it home and if the problem still persists I would leave it for a week to see if by chance the gradient went away...they mentioned the glue story!

Got it home, quickly set up an account and BOOM, there it is! Still the same issue. On another note I checked 2 machines on display and they also had the same problems.

What I would like to say is that the problem is very mild in comparison to the older models. You do have to look closely to see it but it's definitely there. I'm not suggesting that someone who has the new model has not got the issue but I've now checked 5 machines and all have suffered with it. If you have a new model and think it's not there it may be because the last models were so bad it was incredibly easy to spot but this one is vastly improved.

I find the easiest way to check is either create a white blank canvas in Photoshop and then drag the canvas over to the right and then slowly drag it back to the left and when you look closely you'll see a curtain effect where the left is suddenly not as white as the right. You can do the same with your email as well, drag it from the right to the left and you should notice it.

As I said it's so much better than the last models and the colour of the display is decent, not like that horrible yellow that was supposed to be white! Apple have clearly done something but it's still not 100%.

I'm not sure what to do now as I love the performance of these machines. Depending on how it goes in the next week I may take it back again but I've kind of got to the stage where I'm sick and tired of going backwards and forwards and not only that but it seems to be taking up a big chunk of my life so I may just accept that's how the screens are!

I took my Retina into the Apple store and was offered a screen replacement due to my IR. Another issue that I have noticed is that the LED backlighting produces a faint but audible hissing sound when the brightness is turned down very low (1-3 notches). Does anyone else's Retina exhibit this problem? I spoke to Apple customer relations about receiving a new replacement Retina but they said that they would have to replace the screen at least once before they would think about a complete replacement. My IR has gotten to the point where its driving me crazy. I have attached a photo showing the IR that occured while writing this post.

That's not good. I wasn't offered a replacement until my screen had been replaced twice. Although there's nothing to say you won't still have the same issue with a replacement machine.

As for the hissing I can't say I have noticed it in any of the machines I have had so at least if you were to get a replacement that should solve that issue!

Let us know if your replacement is a yellow-tinted Samsung LSN154YL01001.

Received my Haswell 15" 2.3/16/512/750M today.

Very happy to see the LSN display serial

    No yellow gradient either...

much better experience than the 3 rMBP I returned last year to get a samsung. are we seeing a patter here that everyone is getting samsungs with Haswell?

I picked up my 15" 2013 MBP (top spec) and it's Samsung/LSN as well.  Seems like they are all Samsung so far?

The color tone looks the same as my first gen LG display (good), no tinting, and defintaly no IR to be found.  Very happy so far.  (Except that Bootcamp is totally busted, but that's another issue...)

God I hope my 13" arriving tomorrow doesn't have IR.

    Let us know. (:

Okay, so the computer came in today. I transfered my files, and you know how that little white box for the initial computer setup sits on top of a grey backdrop? Well, that box had sat there for about 40 min on medium brighness while my files transfered, with some periodic sleeping and re-waking of screen, and when I went to look at the IR test website, I didn't even have to show the black and white checkboard; the box from the setup window was retained and very visible on the grey backdrop of that website. My wife could totally see it too, so I'm not just nitpicking.

Strange thing is, after running the checkboard test for 10 minutes, we could only see a faint amount of the checkers retain, and strangest yet, they were only visible in the retained image of the box from the setup window and not anywhere outside of it.

This is pretty upsetting. I really don't want to go though the hassle of trying to get the geniuses to replace it, since I couldn't even see the checkboard test, and their test is way easier to pass.

So what are you going to do? Return it? Keep it? You know that if you keep it you risk not failing the test later if the image retention is not severe enough. 15-inch? 13-inch? Could you paste the display model number? How it the colour? Good colour? No yellow-tint? No yellow gradients?

By the way, I know what you wrote after "I'm not just nitpicking." I saw it in the e-mail. Did you remove that sentence or is someone else editing these posts and removed that sentence? I've learned to watch my language here because I've been editing before for saying something bad.

I'm going to return it. I bought a refurbed 11" Air just now. I used the one I bought for my wife, and I really liked it.

I ran the checkerboard for 10 minutes, and now I saw the checkers plain as day.

It's a 13" model. I don't know how to get the display number on this model. In fact, I didn't think there was a way to determine it, like there is a serial number for the 15".

To me, the color is perfect, and there is no tinting or yellow gradients.

Good luck with whatever you end up doing. I just think it might better for me to hold off until they bring a retina screen to the Airs. That will be really nice. A 3.5lb computer is really not all that portable.

And no, I didn't eddit my post. Someone must be watching for stuff like that.
