Q: Apple TV - Can't Sign In, or use YouTube (but other stuff works)

Apple TV was working fine up until yesterday.

I had rented & watched Men in Black 3 and it was all good - that was my first day experience wi Apple TV - great!

Now it's all gone downhill...

Nothing changed on my network - connecting wired directly to my router/modem to the net.

Apple ID is fine as i've tested it on other iDevices.

I have the iTunes Store set to Australia with correct Time Zone.

I've got Home Sharing turned on with my Apple ID on the Apple TV and it's working.

The problems ...

When I try to Sign In, I either get (it's random) ... 'Unable to Sign In - Apple TV can't connect to the server at this time. please try later.', OR  'Unable to Sign In - The Apple ID you entered couldn't be found or your password was incorrect. Please try again.'

When I try to watch YouTube I get ... 'No content was found - There is a problem communicating with YouTube. Try again later.'

Funny thing is everything else works - Movies & TV Shows previews, iTunes Festival, Trailers, Vimeo etc.

*** ? Any ideas guys?

FYI - I'm with iiNet (Australia).

I listened to the guy that said that he took off 2 step notification ...merry christmas and it worked.  I also had to remember that I liked google account with youtube and then use the google account name for it so that I could actually log into youtube via apple TV- man they need to just let people use a masterpassword for this stuff....

Ardent, you solved this problem for me! I've been trying to figure this out on and off for a couple of months--I never thought of inputting an application-specific password!

    Gratefully,

This was all very helpful.  And to add a bit more detail.

Visit your Google Account settings page.  Then on the left click Security.  Subordinate to the “2-step verification” topic click “Manage you application specific passwords”.  Then enter a descriptive name (e.g "family room ATV”).  Complete the process by clicking on the “Generate application-specific password”.  The password that got generated for me allowed me to successfully access youtube.

Hey Rusty, I was in the same boat as you but I just found this link that FINALLY fixed it for me.  I have 2 youtube accounts that are tied together but only one of them has a channel associated with it.  I had to create a channel for the one I rarely use, I guess because it is the one tied to my gmail address.  Then, I used the password from the 2-step verification and it worked.  Good luck!

Thanks Khaleesi - i created a channel for both youtube accounts. 2step verification code selected. Appletv would not accept password. So I tried the other account, used the code, it wouldnt work. *****!!! I want to break something!!!! What am I doing wrong???? this all started because of the stupid Google youtube single password bull!!! Anyone - what can I do?

How can I get in touch with an apple technician to walk me through this? I need help!!!

    Is it the answer ?

    https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/3079858

    YouTube on Apple TV

YouTube does not support YouTube on Apple TV. For issues please visit Apple’s Support Forum.

if yes, they simply should remove the youtube option to sign in on Apple TV !!!

Yes. I found out today about this. Also I was meddling with 2-step authentication to setup Gmail on iPhone 5 and that messed up Youtube with slow buffering and video would not start playing at all. With these new account mess up by Google it is all confusing the devices with additional burden. May be Youtube app now wants to validate my account for each IP packet that gets into Apple TV!!!! I don't know there might be some "so called Thinking Smart" security guy coded it that way!

The same problem happens on my Sony Blu-Ray BDP-BX59

Same here Rustychrome - ive tried putting in my email as the username after doing the 2 step verification- doesnt work. Have tried all the methods suggested on these forums- none of it works.

I need this app to work because it is necessary for me to link to Youtube from Safari.

Have you solved this problem?  PS i can sign in with the Google Youtube App, the Apple one is the broken one.

YouTube content is the primary source of streaming entertainment and information I use. I have tried everything to log onto my account and have failed. Meanwhile, my old Boxee Box, WDTV, my MacBook and my iPhone log on just fine and always have. This is an epic fail on Apple's part and is no doubt one of the contributing factors to it's low star rating at Amazon. I've been an Apple fan for almost 30 years now, and this is the first product I've ever bought from them that I can unequivically call a dud. Apple really needs to work on this. It's too light to use as a door stop and too square to use as a hockey puck, which makes it totally useless to me in any other capacity.

You want some cheese with that whine?

If Youtube means that much to you, get a Chromecast, http://www.google.com/intl/en-US/chrome/devices/chromecast/

Not a big cheese fan, but here's some more whine my witty friend. Just tried to start trial Netflix subscription on my Apple TV 3. "We're unable to connect to Netflix. Please try again later (ATV-ui20)". Got on my buggy, old Boxee Box and signed right up. So now Netflix and Youtube don't work. Love Apple, typing this on my new MacBook Air (while texting back and forth with my wife on our iPhones), own lots of their stock. But the Apple TV experience has been one of complete crap, so far.
