I suffer from the same dilemma, except in my case iTunes 220.127.116.11 on my ThinkPad X230 with Win7 64bit crashes. I can click and watch a movie trailer in iTunes fine, but the same trailer downloaded and saved will crash iTunes if I click on the saved trailer. If I try to just play the saved trailer with QuickTime Pro 7.7.4, it opens QT and starts playing without crashing QT, but also without a picture or sound.
I have followed many instruction on the Apple Support Forums, made sure that all my ThinkPad software/drivers are up-to-date, and the same for Win7, I uninstalled iTunes and all of its components as per the support instructions and did a clean install of iTunes 18.104.22.168 and QuickTime 7.7.4.
What gives? What am I overlooking? Everything else in my iTunes seems to be working fine.
Does anyone know about the MSVCR80.dll problem and how to fix it?
Here is the crash report:

I realize this is the iTunes for Mac Forum, but maybe somenone can still help me. Thank you
I'm having the same issue, and I did some digging, and it seems that iTunes may not be the issue, but the file itself. I recently tried to download the new Captain America Winter Soldier trailer (both 720 and 1080 versions) and I looked into trying to play them on other media players when it crashed iTunes, and I noticed that all players, including Quicktime, did the same thing. The time marker moves as if the video is playing, but it's just a black screen with no audio. Whenever this happens, that usually means there's something wrong with the file, that it's just gigabytes of useless data. I tried re-downloading, but it seems that the file on the iTunes store servers is corrupt/broken. Any ideas on how to let the techs know this?
I've had the same thing happen on both a PC and a Mac. Usually when you go to iTunes to play a trailor and it either doesn't start or stops midway or keeps buffering it's due to a slow internet connection. It still happens to me on my new Mac.
But if I buy and download movies they play fine. I don't pay for the fastest connection in the world though.
I think you are right. The 720p HD trailer for the movie Adore does not work while the 720p HD trailer for The Numbers Station does. I also noticed that when I located the saved files in the folder itself, the Adore movie shows only the QuickTime logo while the file for The Numbers Station movie shows the art cover and Quicktime logo.
I hope Apple can fix this problem soon.
For the record. The file on the server is fine. If you copy the download link and save it to your computer instead of downloading through iTunes, then the movie plays fine. If you then import that file into iTunes, then the movie plays fine. If you try to add artwork to that file once it is in iTunes, then the file becomes corrupt and no video player will play it. I can reproduce this on multiple trailers on multiple computers (mac and pc). I have eliminated my personal computer, router, and modem from being the problem through a series of trials.
I have come to the inescapable conclusion that iTunes is corrupting the quicktime .mov file when adding the artwork, which is not part of the file on the server. I'm not sure why this is, or why it seems to be unique to trailers and not all trailers.
I have been searching for months on the Net for resolution and have found very few people that seem to be commenting on the problem. This is definitely something that needs resolution from Apple.
How would I copy the download link and save it to my computer? I copied the link from iTunes and pasted it into a browser, and right clicking the video gives me "Save as Source" and "Save as Quicktime Movie" and both are Quicktime PRO options, and I don't have Pro, and what you're suggesting sounds like something anyone is allowed to do.
You're right on target with your analysis of the problem, bulkmail...
I downloaded the file in the download link in iTunes and the file plays fine. I can even import it into iTunes and play the trailer in iTunes without an issue. I didn't like the look of the artwork it used for the imported file (it simply shows a frame of the video in a small widescreen format rather than the movie poster look that occurs when you download the trailer through iTunes) so I copied the artwork used in the iTunes downloaded trailer and added it to the trailer I imported. Once I did that, the trailer that was working prior to setting of the artwork, stopped working... and behaved the same way it did as if I downloaded it through iTunes. So the problem does seem to be linked to assigning artwork to the trailer... be it automatically when iTunes downloads it or manually when you set it yourself.
I have a feeling that this won't be fixed anytime soon... I think the amount of people that download trailers in this manner is a small subset of users. And now with the Apple Trailer app on iOS, there are even less people that would download trailers to put on their iOS devices...
Still completely broken. I just tried Amazing Spider Man 2, Edge of Tomorrow, and Jupiter Ascending, and came across the same problem as before with Captain America: Winter Soldier. How'd this ever get past bug testing, when it seems to affect every single trailer? More importantly, how do we get Apple to know about the issue?
Yeah, I'll add a "ME TOO!!".
For quite some time now, probably for the beter part of the last 7-12 months, have i had a downloaded trailer playback issue with iTunes Trailer. 1 out of every 20, maybe, will playback after being downloaded. I've tried my Win XP, Win 7, Mac Pro Lion OS, Macbook Pro Mountain Lion OS and someone elses Macbook Mavericks OS and NONE work. after hours upon hours of searching the internet for solution i've not come across any, and this particular thread is the most promising i have ever come across, as sad as that is. i've rented and downloaded full movies from itunes, a handfull now about 7, and all of those playback just fine. but, practically none of the trailers download, and ive tried to re-download the same trailers over periods of time and across various platform iTunes iterations unsuccessfully.
