Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Can you help me with the Terminal command? I just picked up the base rMBP and the command I have used from the beginning is coming up with nothing. I have never had a problem with this and now it looks as if they have removed it but you were able to retrieve it. Please help. Thanks!

13 inch or 15 inch? Might only work on 15 inch.

Tell us about your display. Is there image retention? Is it yellow tinted? Are there yellow gradients? Does the case creak when you press down around the trackpad? Are there stuck pixels or muras?

Maybe someone else in this thread like Chris Yates will tell us the new command to use.

There is a slight bit of very faint yellowing on the bottom right and left. Very small amount but its visible. No bleeding colors seem pretty decent. Don't have a calibration tool to see if I can remove the yellowing but it is better than some previous version I have had in the past. It seems to look more like the LG but I never had any yellowing on the LG's before so I can't figure this one. Strange thing is, when I first went to the terminal and pasted the command, it made me download developer tools. It said if I was using strings that I must download the tools and I never had this happen before. I have had several of these over the last year so this is very odd!!!

    You tested for image retention?

Hi.. I'm from Italy and I'm still waiting to buy a MPr 15" since the first came out, like a lot of you I think are doing.

Can anyone who just purchased the new 15 Haswell one tell me if the problem is solved?

This situation is terrible for customers. I remember when Jobs used to apologize the manufacturing faults....

There are a lot of problems in Italy and I need a powerful laptop for work. I saved the money for a lot of time despite the political crisis of my country.

Maybe I need to "Think Different"... Different from Apple

The terminal command is the same as the one you posted I'm using the 15" and that's how I got my screen details.

Just to mention that I have had no IR whatsoever and that included the time when I was transferring all my data with the white box and grey background which eventually took approx 13 hours, not a hint of IR.

As mentioned about the colours they are much much better on the Samsung, similar to that of the LG without yellowing. As I said the yellow gradient is very mild.

The ones I have seen do have very mild yellow gradient and in fact it's so mild I would imagine 98% of people wouldn't notice it. The screens I have seen are much better than the last models, my concern with this model was I would get a Samsung screen with horrible yellow, that is not the case anymore with my experience so far, the colour on the Samsungs are much much better.

As far as the machine itself the rMBPs are brilliant machines, I've been using Apple products for 25 years and the rMBP perdormance wise is definitely the best machine I have owned.

If you get a chance why not go and look at one in Store and see what you think.

Another thing I would like to add about the mild gradient is it only tends to be visible on white so if any other colour is showing you'll not notice it (presuming you notice on white!).

Thanks for the fast reply Chris.

I think I'll wait a couple of days to see the opinions of the other customers on this forum.

(Just for curiosity... Do you know if a MacBook purchased online can be returned in an Apple Store?)

Probably not such a bad idea to wait a few days.

Having said that it's only people with issues that will generally come onto this forum and post so you need to bear in mind there will thousands of others who don't have a problem or it's so mild they don't notice it.

As for buying online I believe you can't return to a store but Apple do all the donkey work for year as far as I am aware, get it picked up etc.

    I understand.

I'm worrying about this laptop 'cause I work and study in a Hospital where I look at lots of radiography and some artefacts like ghosting can let you see something that isn't really there.

A mild yellow gradient will not be a serious problem, at least (I think) out of the Tomography field.

Thanks for the replies! I'll let this forum know how this situation will end.
