Q: Is it possible to add new tags after i accidentally deleted some?

I was renaming all the new coloured tags on my MacBook and i accidentally deleted some of the tags. I now dont have enough for all my different subjects but can see no option to add new tags, is it possible?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

If you don't have the full default set of 10 tags in Finder Sidebar > All tags, I'd go to Finder Preferences > Sidebar and uncheck and re-check tags.

I made the silly mistake of deleting ALL tags (figured I would start from scratch and set things up myself)

Now the Tags tab is empty and toggling "Recent Tags" off and on from the sidebar does nothing.

    Anyone have any other ideas?

On the plus side: I made a Time Machine backup of the MacBook so I can restore the modified file(s)... if only I knew where they were!!

Doesn't Finder menu (on your menu bar) > Preferences > Sidebar check tags restore them for you?

I double-tapped them and chose Remove, so the Tags tab is empty. Also the Finder -> File -> Tags menu is greyed out.

Not Finder > File > Tags

Finder menu > Preferences > Sidebar > Tags

macjack, thank you for trying to help.

Sorry for not being clear in my previous post (it's 4 AM here). I did check Preferences as you suggested in your original post and sadly it didn't work for me. Whenever I refer to the "Tags tab" I am indeed referring to the tab found in Preferences.

In my previous post I mentioned that File -> Tags is greyed out as additional info.

Again, thanks for trying to help! :)

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:

    com.apple.finder.plist

    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Then, restart, or log out and in again.

(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

What I've done to create new tags from scratch is to create a throwaway text file called "tag test" (or something like that) and temporarily place it on my Desktop for easy access. Then, in Finder, I select the "tag test" file and click the "Edit Tags" icon in the toolbar at the top of the Finder window. (The "Edit Tags" icon looks like a horizontal switch.) From there, you can create a brand-new tag (say, "Tag 1"). After you press Enter, "Tag 1" will appear in the Tags list in the Sidebar. Two-finger click "Tag 1" in the Sidebar, and from the contextual menu, select the color you would like to apply. (You may also rename "Tag 1" to something else if you choose.)

Repeat this process as many times as necessary in order to recreate all the tags you'd like -- and then delete the "tag test" file.

    Hope that helps.

This worked for me! Thanks. My green tag is back.
