Q: After Mavericks Server upgrade: cannot start DNS

Hi,

the upgrade to Mavericks went smooth on my Mac Mini, and also the upgrade of the Server App except on issue. I switched off DHCP an DNS before upgrading, but I cannot turn on DNS again. It will turn off instantly. I deleted the records and reentered all them with no success. I also tried "sudo rm /var/db/.ServerSetupDone" which will run the Server App like the first time, but all settings and my DNS error remain. What can I do? How can I reset DNS settings or all Server App settings?

Thank you

Peter

Confirmed. Same problem here. Deleted and re-created zones files manually. No way.

I have the same issue.  Try this, its working for me.  From command line:

    # sudo serveradmin stop dns

    # sudo serveradmin start dns

Best I can tell the service gets in some odd hung state.  If you do a stop first, it will list it again as "stopped" but a start afterward will actually succeed.

I'm in the process of writing a very basic automator script to just run these two commands on startup.  Very annoying.

Thanks for your help. dns state = stopped, even I try to restart DNS via serveradmin

Got this from another list here and that was the solution:

The plist that you need to edit (as root) is /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist

There will be a value in there for org.isc.named.

Set that Disabled value to False.

This worked, thank you very much! Saved me a time consuming reinstallation!

That actually isn't my issue in my case, yet I see similar behavior. Leaving my stop/start out there as it may help others.

Determined what my issue was.  I had been manually been running bind and starting/stopping it via LaunchDaemon script on boot up.  This carried over when I upgraded and installed the server packages.  Removing my /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.isc.named.plist file cleared it up.  DNS starts on reboot now without getting hung.

This is the first time in years (since 2010) that I find a direct answer that works as a charm...  Thanks!

Wow, like @gesTI.ca I am so glad to see a problem AND solution posted all within the same thread. However I'm still not getting warm and fuzzy feelings about upgrading my Mac Mini Server (mid-2011) from Lion Server to a.) Mavericks Client and then the new OS X Server (v 3.0).

I have about 2 dozen zones in my DNS, as well an equal amount of web (virtual) hosts. . .   but I so badly want to move to Mavericks.  Reading as much as I can in the forums before diving into the Mavericks surf!  —michael
