Q: sync without iCloud?

After I have installed Mountain Lion, I have had a number of sync issues via iTunes and for a while I thought these were the same reasons I could not sync my notes from my iPhone with the fancy new application on my Macbook.....until I came across this article informing me that it is no longer supported in Mountain Lion(!!!!): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4191  (relevant part half way down under Syncing Notes with iTunes and OS X Mountain Lion v10.8)

I am a traditionalist when it comes to privacy and data security. I like to keep my data on my hardware behind firewall, only upload data onto the web that I genuinly want to share with others (...even to the point of using POP mail account). I have no intention to use iCloud (it seems I am not alone in this, sure you all read the comments by Steve Wozniak http://www.techradar.com/news/networking/routers-storage/apple-co-founder-thinks -the-cloud-will-be-horrendous-1091188).

The way things go, I will end up with 6 different Mac devices at home that will stop talking to each other unless I feed all the data into the cloud.

Does anyone know a way to sync everything just on your home network, without having to upload stuff to the web? Why cannot we have our own homeCloud? Any suggestions welcome (including from Apple)......Hope I will not have to abandon my Mac devices and consider (dare I even say) Windows!?

:-) yes thanks Csound1.  I was thinking of the wrong thing when I sead the wrong thing about calendars and contacts.  I was rembering the posts about MobilMe sorry about that.  But that reminds me why when we was talking about the end of MobilMe sync'ing did we not come up with the idear of useing a OS X server at home?

Many thanks again, TopSteve. It will be a learning curve for me, but if nothing changes on Apple's side I will have to give it a try.

Other clients can sync with CalDav and CardDav (there are examples out there already) there is nothing unusual about the implementation. Your problem is that most Servers are not Clients so some research will be needed to find one that can. (Soho Organizer is an example of a Dav client that works just fine with Apple services, as is eMclient (Windows)

    Thanks for the clarification Csound1!

To rc-apple and other unhappy friends,

As we were instructed, these forum discussions apparently not the right places for voicing our dissatisfaction, the recommended place is to provide feedback under the Contact section, but even better is to provide a rating and a review in the App Store. I encourage you all to voice your opinions there. Apple pays more attention to those.

To rc-apple and other unhappy friends,

I missed the message (from rc-apple I guess?) where we were instructed to not voice our dissatisfaction here. I still see this as a thread that's discussing what the heck to do about finding ways to work with our apple computers and products with the newly flawed software that's removing basic functionality. Yes there's voicing dissatisfaction. Any time there's a support forum, people will be dissatisfied with whatever it is they're getting support for that does not work! It's kind of bizarre to have a support forum/community, where people go to get help with certain issues, and expect them to not be frustrated/angry/upset with the issues they're having to seek support for.

That being said, I agree that if someone's only reason for posting here is to complain, and they think that will make a difference with apple, they're wasting their time doing that here. As you said, giving the app low stars in the App store is a better option*. Another option is to submit complaints to http://www.apple.com/feedback You can submit your feedback there more than once. It's a good link to have bookmarked.

I still welcome any input/ideas/discussion about how to restore local syncing to our apple products, and hope more ideas about that will be posted here.

    * Editing this to add that in order to rate something in the App Store, you need to have purchased it. If you find out in advance that something is wrong with an OS, and choose not to purchase it based on that, you can't express your thought/opinions/warnings/dissatisfaction there.

To Z001 and I am Mel,

your comment is arrived and sorry, if my comment was taken as a complaint only. And thanks for the url to apple's feedback. I will use this for sure.

Ah! I see. rc-apple is a regular user who posted here. I misunderstood and thought maybe they were a mod who didn't like the direction of this thread.

I still think it's normal to expect people to express dissatisfaction in a support thread, but again, if someone's goal is to reach apple with their complaints, the App store ratings, contacts link, and/or the link I posted above is a better way to do that.

    - Good luck rc-apple! I hope they listen to you!

All those in this discussion may also want to check out the discussion "How to locally sync an iPhone with OS X Mavericks? iCloud is NOT an option." Here is the link: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5460803?start=180&tstart=0

The conclusion is also server option at the moment, you may just want to check out additional comments on implementing it.

I can understand the concern about putting our data where it can be gathered by third parties, but didn't an earlier response indicate you could sync to a local server?

That seems like a not-bad use of a Raspberry Pi: load it with an OS with an option to put your own CalDav and CardDav local servers on it.

Or perhaps find a router that can host those services?

ALCON!!!!  YOU CAN'T GO BACK TO MOUNTAIN LION UNLESS YOU HAVE A HARD COPY!!!

I am trying to clean install Mountain Lion again but I purchased it from the App Store and now I cant re-download it!  I have been trying all day.  It shows as one of my purchases but when I try to download it again it does nothing!  The button appears to v-click but it doesn't change from download and no download starts.  When I click on the discription, it says "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store."

Unless you have a hard copy we maybe stuck!!!

This may be the final move to control our ability to determine what OS we are running...and who has access to our data!

Wish I had waited to update.  Does anyone have a hard copy of Mountain Lion they want to sell?

...in addition, I have been trying to go back to Snow Leopard and the Mail versions are significantly diffrent enough you cant drag your current (OS 10.9) mail folder in to the old SL mail library.

    CAUTION TO ALL!!!

It seems to be available from here:

Not sure if this is any use but worth a try.

Disregard, panicked.  It was downloading but only showed up in the dock (hidden).  Installed and running now.

With this new technology all people need internet connection.. but not always this thus.

If you dont have internet connection you cant sync calendars or notes or reminders from two gadgets conected by cable at 1 meter distance.. its ridiculous..!

This is the most ridiculous update form apple.
