Q: WiFi connection fails at startup

Why doesn't MBP Retina succeed with wifi connect at startup, after the recent 10.8.3 and firmware upgrade?

I had no problem before the upgrade.

It happens at every startup.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Have tried the Keychain & WiFi reset, and it's stable so far.

Thanks a lot for sharing your solution with us!

I have the same problem. Tried all the solutions mentioned above but no go :-( Just as the others, I have the problem that it won't connect at startup. Get a self-assigned IP address. But if turn off the WIFI and then turn it on again it works fine.

Any other ideas? This is a problem I just started noticing yesterday, though I rarely restart my computer, a 2012 MBA with OS X 10.8.4. I also have a 2011 MBP at home with OS X 10.8.4 but there is no such WIFI problem on that computer.

Another interesting note. My home network consists of a NAT router from my ISP connected to the internet with WIFI off and then two Airport Expresses, one on each floord, set up as a roaming network. It all works fine, except for this little oddity with the MBA. Upon closer investigation, it also turns out that if I start the MBA when I am close to the downstairs Airport Express - a 1st Gen - then there is no problem connecting at startup. But if I start the MBA near the upstairs Airport Express - a 2nd Gen - then the problem occurs.

Can't seem to get my head around the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I've got the same problem: WiFi Connection fails at every startup.

After running the networking assistant it starts working properly.

This is really annoying. The solutions mentioned above did not work.

As I figured out this is a general problem with new the macbook air.

Maybe it concerns the new MBP early 2013 as well because I'm using

    a brand new Macbook Pro Retina 15" early 2013 with OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    I have the same problem.

    MBA mid 2013.

I did the last update but it didn't work. (OSX 10.8.5)

After boot wifi is always off.

Switch to on I can connect without problems.

The problem is always after boot. Wifi is always turned off

Tried all suggestions and no luck.

Someone has the fix for this problem?

Thanks very much, this solved my problem.

I had previously tried both steps independently (erasing the keychain password and in another step to remove the network in the preference panel), but without results.

It is thus important to complete both steps and being disconnected from the wifi network.

(independenlty from the macos version, I noticed that the problem was not appearing with a WEP password, and only with a WAP2 password).

At least, I will now be able to also create a closed network.

Thanks again for posting a reliable solution. I wished that Apple had worked this out.

I got some update about this issue.

Athought cfreuler's solution can help, but this issue will still happen from time to time.

I guess we really need apple take a good look on this wifi issue.

Unfortunately Kevin, my enthusiasm was misplaced, since I am again having the issue.

Although my own network will display correctly in the Wi-fi menu, selecting it will not work.

I need to select 'Join Other network…' > 'Show Networks' and then only when selecting my own network, I will be connected to it.

I am wondering if this could be an issue related to the airport station that I am using an Airport 802.11g

The upgrade to OS X 10.9.1 solved my problem, no more connection failure now.

No, acually it worked for four days only. Now it's back to the good old connection failure at startup. Weird that Apple can't do anything about this. And yes I'm upgraded to 10.9.1.

It's clearly an OS related problem (ignored by Apple), my iMac running 10.9.3 also suffers from this annoying failure.
