Oct 26, 2013 5:32 AM in response to Jason Kimby Crazycat1,Hi
Been reading through this thread. I have the same problem. I dared to change my email address and so now can't access the cloud on my iphone, but it's happily accepting the new email to sign into the cloud on my PC. Surely the rules don't change just because I'm not on my iphone? So now how do I create an alias to get round this when I can't even sign into the mail?

Actually, you are like 50% of the people on this thread and are confusing 2 different problems:
- Changing the email address which is your Apple ID.
- Changing the iCloud email address associated with your Apple ID.
Doing item 1 is possible and documented here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5621
Doing item 2 is not allowed (but it is technically possible) at this time by Apple due to poor architecture decisions made when they designed iCloud email.
For example, years ago, I created an Apple ID to use iTunes. This Apple ID is equal to my email address. Mine is bob@gmail.com' (ficticious). This year, when I signed up for iCloud, the setup procedure asked me to pick an iCloud email address to go with my Apple ID. I chose 'robert@icloud.com' (ficticious). Now, when I log into iCloud as 'bob@gmail.com' I can check my email sent to 'robert@icloud.com'. That iCloud email address is associated with my Apple ID. If I change my email address from 'bob@gmail.com' to 'bob@outlook.com', I can follow a procedure to change it (see above). If I want to change 'robert@icloud.com' to 'bob@icloud.com', Apple will not allow me to do that.
So if you are like me, and wish to do item 2, then please complain to Apple about this situation here:

Oct 27, 2013 6:35 AM in response to je44eryby Crazycat1,Hi
Thanks for that. I might well complain to Apple. However, this doesn't help my current situation. I was all ready to sell my phone and upgrade to a 5c. Had actually sold it on ebay and only found out I had a problem when I was unable to erase all contents and settings because the email address which came up for me to enter my password is the old (icloud) one. Although I was sure of the password, it keeps throwing it out.Odd that there's no mention of the icloud settings - it just asks for my password to match the Apple id. So is this really the icloud setting I'm looking at here?

Oct 27, 2013 12:53 PM in response to Crazycat1by lanceanz,It is your iCloud password it needs. Apple presumably uses "Apple ID" for both because they want to encourage everyone to use the same ID for iCloud and iTunes.

Oct 30, 2013 1:51 PM in response to lanceanzby LaurieLou86,Hi I am having similar problems to you crazycat1. I have just upgraded to 5c and having icloud issues with usernames.
my original appleId was a@hotmail.co.uk, but subsequently updated to b@hotmail.co.uk, with updated password also.
my original iphone was fine with this, it occasionally spouted out a request to log in with my old appleId username/password (the a@hotmail.co.uk) but somehow I got round it.
there was an issue with my icloud on my original iphone, but i deleted the account, then just signed in again to icloud with newer appleId username (b@hotmail.co.uk) with new password and was good to go.
however with new phone the 5c, i could use my newer appleId username/password fine (b@hotmail.co.uk) on the app store and to set it up, but for icloud it keeps asking for password for my old appleId, a@hotmail.co.uk - which doesn't exist anymore! I have tried passwords old and new for the appleId a@hotmail.co.uk and none of them work. when it suggests I reset my password for a@hotmail.co.uk, I do so, and it updates my password for my appleId as a whole, even for username b@hotmail.co.uk, but still can't log into icloud on new phone.
suggestions much appreciated, am going bonkers!

Oct 31, 2013 8:24 AM in response to Highlordkramby johnwhitney,Not sure if it helps, but in icloud.com: click the Mail icon, then the gear icon on the lower left, then preferences option, and finally accounts (the @ icon).
Here you can see all your icloud emails and you can create up to three alias emails. I played around until I found one that was not taken: to have a correct icloud email FINALLY.
When you reply, you can select the alias email.

Nov 13, 2013 2:59 PM in response to Highlordkramby Tlentz425,So I had a similar problem. I used @aol.com instead of @gmail.com. I did the whole deleting my account and going back in and it worked for me! It took about 5 seconds to do.

Nov 14, 2013 6:43 AM in response to je44eryby AnthonyNC,This is insane. Doing #2 broke my ability to use photostream via bot my PC and my Mac.
-
Nov 14, 2013 6:46 AM in response to Jason Kimby AnthonyNC,But what they do NOT tell you is how choosing an iCloud email not the same as your Apple ID email will break Photostream usage via your PC and Mac. If I knew that, I would never have dared to choose a different email address than my Apple ID.

Nov 16, 2013 1:39 PM in response to vot9783by Hayley73,I Have changed Apple ID etc successfully - my problem is iCloud is asking for email and password verification the password is being sent to an old email address I can't access. I need to know how to delete an iCloud account and set up a new one if I don't have the email and password for the old one. At this stage it is empty so have no data to lose but can't get a new account to purchase into yet can't access old account. Can anyone help?

Nov 17, 2013 11:03 AM in response to Hayley73by Joe & Cheryl,This is how i fixed my problem, thanks to Roscoe23!
The original post here was talking about changing the Apple ID for iCloud. I had the same issue since I just changed the email account used for my Apple ID and I could not change the iCloud login name. Here's what it took to fix it:
First, had to change my Apple ID for the iTunes App. Hit the icon, scroll to the bottom, click the Apple ID: name@email.com button. Click Sign Out, go back to the button at the bottom which is now "Sign In" and enter the new info.
Second, as one of the earlier posts describes, hit the Settings icon, iCloud. Delete account. Go through the steps and enter new info.
Without that first step of changing in iTunes, could not manage to change it for iCloud.
