Q: Verify Disk stops in Mavericks

I installed Mavericks on my 15" MBP, and it seemed to go fine (too soon to tell, really).  In Disk Utility, I ran Verify Disk for the whole disk and it checked out OK.  But when I tried it on my single partition (as I usually do), it stopped spontaneously.  Repair Permissions worked, but Verify stopped three times:  twice after "Checking Volume Information" and once after "Checking Extended Attributes File".  No error message; it just stopped.

Should I be concerned about this?

Look in the "All Messages" category in the Console utility to see if there are any messages that might explain the problem.

Thanks for your suggestion.  Console does say "Repair Tool Completed".  But DU doesn't have the usual green message.  I can't see any error messages or bad behavior.  Could this be the way Verify Disk performs under Mavericks?

It seems to be a bit quirky.  Perhaps OS X 10.9.1 will fix it.

Same issue, but I restarted in the recovery partition (restart computer, hold command-R while booting) and ran it there. It completed successfully.

It seems broken to me.  I ran a number of Disk Utility Verify Disk checks on my main partition, one after the other.  After the third one, which only showed two fo teh checcks being done, I suddenly got three green OKs, but each attempt had reported a different number of checks.  The final two also showed a different number of checks, but no green OK at all.

It worked correctly when I ran an 'fsck -fy' from Single User mode.

Perhaps Apple may release an updated fixed Disk Utility before 10.9.1 comes along - it seems to be a glaring fault in a basic tool.

The repair tool seems to be working fine.  It's just the reporting component that doesn't work all the time.  To verify this, launch the Console utility and leave it open while you run a "Verify Disk" operation.  You should see  completion message in Console.

I'm not counting on that happening.

It's a known issue and bug reports have been filed. The log is correct.

You can file feedback here. The more who file the more chance it will get done.

    No.

I have experienced the same thing.

If you boot into recovery mode (command R) on reboot,  you can use DiskUtility here to both verify and repair without the issue you mention.

    Hello.

    I'm using Mavricks 10.9.2

    Try this:

    Open "Disk Utility"

Click the "Log" button (top right hand of window)

    Click back to "DIsk Utility"

Select start up partition eg. "Macintosh HD"

    Click "Verify"

I got the green text confirmation,

Also, the log should mention confirmation as well.

Looks like this is a simple bug.

    :-)

I'm having the same issue, installed the 10.9.3 update yesterday and that didn't fix it. I found that verifying the Macintosh HD in the recovery partition works fine, it's an inconvenience but it works until Apple fixes this bug.

Still not fixed in 10.9.4. Kind of annoying.

If you run the disk check in terminal with sudo...

    sudo diskutil verifyVolume "Macintosh HD"

then it progresses further than without sudo. If I run it normally it stops at "Checking extended attributes file" whereas with sudo it completes the whole check (Up to "Checking volume bitmap"). However in both instances it does finish with the "Finished file system verification on..." message.

Same here with 10.9.4. Sometimes I see the green OK on the 3rd or 4th attempt, or and after relaunching Disk Utility and or my MacBook Pro.

    I tried this:

    Hello.

    I'm using Mavricks 10.9.2

    Try this:

    Open "Disk Utility"

Click the "Log" button (top right hand of window)

    Click back to "DIsk Utility"

Select start up partition eg. "Macintosh HD"

    Click "Verify"

I got the green text confirmation,

Also, the log should mention confirmation as well.

Looks like this is a simple bug.

and it seemed to work. But I agree with this:

Still not fixed in 10.9.4. Kind of annoying.

Hey, seeing the Green OK is an Extra Piece of Mind. Not seeing Red Errors is nice, but seeing Green OK is even nicer:)!

Let's hope that 10.9.5 or whatever other OS Update will fix this, assuming that Apple already know about this!

Here is a Suggestion I have for Apple:

If there is an Error with Macintosh HD Internal Startup Disk, it'd be great if there was a Button in Disk Utility that we could click on and it would do the Following:

    Restart Mac into Recovery Partition

    Open Disk Utility

Select that Macintosh HD Internal Startup Disk

    Offer to Repair it

Why do I think of that Button? Because sometimes, particularly when it's not a very experienced user, who becomes nervous when they see Error(s) in Red, they might forget about

Just hold down Command-R during startup and OS X

as described here https://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/ and, if there is no Internet Access at that time, it might be harder for them to look this topic up.

But then, maybe such Suggestion is too hard to do? Just a thought on my part!

Either way, let's hope that this issue "Verify Disk stops in Mavericks" is fixed soon!  Thanks in advance for your help, Apple!

Thanks. I tried this and the log says "Repair tool completed". However, the Console says this:

10/28/14 5:43:13.317 PM Disk Utility[524]: *** WARNING: Method userSpaceScaleFactor in class NSWindow is deprecated on 10.7 and later. It should not be used in new applications. Use convertRectToBacking: instead.

    Thanks,

    Neil
