Q: Fast User Switching Slow on Mavericks

Hi,

Has anyone noticed that fast user switching has slowed down after installing Mavericks?  I have 2 users set up on my 2011 iMac and switching from user A to B is slow (about 20 seconds) but B back to A is super fast (3 seconds).

Appreciate some help on this!

I worked it out!  Seems that the other user profile had been switched to 'Managed' (i.e. Parental Controls on).  Changed it to 'Standard' and switching between users is now super fast again.

    Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. But I don't really understand how you've fixed it. I have two user accounts. One as Administrator and an other Standard.

Fast switching from standard to admin is super fast. But switching from admin to standard takes 30 seconds...

I've try to make standard account into administrator, it doesn't change anything.

    Thank you for your feedback.

    Olivier

    Hi Olivier,

Open up System Preferences and look at the Standard user account.  See if 'Enable Parental Controls' is ticked.  I found when I upgraded to Mavericks that the Standard user account suddenyl had Parental controls ticked.  When I un-ticked it the fast switching worked quickly again.

    Hope this helps.

I have this problem, but none of my accounts have Parental Controls enabled.

When I switch to my second account for the first time (i.e. when it's not logged in), I get a spinny circle for 30 seconds after typing in the password before it logs in.

Once logged in, I can switch back and forth between the two accounts instantly.

But when I log back out of my second account, I get a gray screen with just my cursor for 30 seconds before I get the system log in prompt again.

Ah, I solved my particular problem.

Turns out I had to delete /System/Library/Extensions/ElmediaPlayer.kext which I didn't even know I had. More details here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24661754#24661754

Er.. Oops I go back on my previous comment.

After more testing, I discovered that ElmediaPlayer was NOT the culprit. Rather, it was this sequence of steps:

    1. Install Soundflower

    2. Move /Applications/Soundflower into a different folder (e.g. subfolder)

THAT is the true cause of my problem. I didn't notice it before because right after re-installing Soundflower, I hadn't moved the folder yet. So appologies to ElmediaPlayer for my false accusation.
