Can DxO be used either as an external editor or a plug in with Aperture? Currently have AP v3.5 and OS Mavericks

Aperture 3, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), running an iMac

You need to use something like Catapult for that.

DxO's raw conversion sure does thoroughly smoke Aperture's.

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2 GHz), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

With a standard Aperture plug in, Aperture will render a TIFF and send it to the plug-in for manipulation.

Catapult sets things up so that Aperture sends the raw file to DxO. You then let DxO perform the raw conversion and write out a TIFF. Catapult then associates that TIFF with the raw file in Aperture. It also keeps track of DxO's .dop file for later usage if you open the file again.

I'm fairly new to using Catapult, but it doesn't appear to copy over the metadata for you.

You can edit metadata, but don't bother with adjustments until you get the image back from Catapult. The adjustments that you make with Aperture makes don't impact the master image, which is what Catapult sends to DxO. You can make adjustments to the DxO output that's imported back into Aperture.
