Had this problem just now. The MacBook signed in with no problem, the iMac complained.

After futilely trying the various suggestions here what worked for me was logging out from my normal user account I use on the machine, logging into the primary account and logging into the App Store from there.

    Hi ,

Unfortunatley I can't sign in the first place to sign out ...Just get the cursed "an unknown error has occurred " when  I try to login. Yet I can sign in on my daughters Macbook no worries ...Grrrrrrrrrrr!

No need to sign in first.

Deleting Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and then delete NetworkInterfaces.plist

Restarting. Going to the system prefs/network - saving then launching the app store.

    Did the trick for me.

Resetting the network adapters to ensure that the wired/Ethernet interface was first one and working resolved it. Using an external wireless was the problem.

This worked for me - except I would change one word:

My issue was that I have 2 NICs, and I started using the 2nd one after experiencing issues with the 1st.  Basically OS X and the APP Store/iCloud/etc. did not like that I had changed from "Ethernet" to "Ethernet 2".  By deleting this plist file, then rebooting with NIC #2 connected (and no cable in NIC 1), OS X recognized the #2 NIC as the "Ethernet" and not "Ethernet 2".  Kinda wacky, but I am glad it worked.

I cant find "SystemConfiguration" Folder or "NetworkInterface.plist" anywhere in Library/Preferences...Anything I'm missing. This AppStore sign in thing is making me nuts! lol

    Running OSX 10.7.5 (Lion)

I cannot find it either on 10.6.8 and am having the "unknown error" show up in the App Store like most others here

It's under Finder "Go" tab computer/Library/preferences/system configuration. I deleted the .plist file but it didn't resolve the sign in error. What did work for me was I was able to change my country from US to Canada. Then when I signed in a message came up something like " the Apple ID you entered is associated with a different country" it redirected back to USA and logged me in with no issue. As a result Mavericks is installed and it's awesome!

    Good Luck.

I have just had success with this by deleting the auto-filled apple I'd, then retyping it in, then filling in the

    password.
