Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Can you confirm that you have the dedicated GPU

Yes, it is rMBP 15" 2.3Ghz/16GB/512GB with 2 video cards: Iris Pro + GeForce GT 750M.

    Sorry, wasn't clear.

The current models are supposed to have the newer retina displays in them.

This is the current production model.  The same screen is also being made by Samsung as well to keep up with screen demand.

Correction to oshyshko,  Your computer has iris pro 4600 integrated graphics (part of the new i7 gen. processor) and a discrete graphics card. It has only one "card" which is the Nvidia Geforce GT 750M.

In addition to what I just posted, it should also be pointed out that it appears that *some* kind of LCD panel model distinction is able to be seen if you go to System Preferences -> Displays -> Color -> Open Profile (opens ColorSync Utility) -> scroll down to -- and click on -- 'mmod' / "Apple display make and model information".

On the Ivy Bridge 15" Retina models, the manufacturer would always be 610 (Apple?), and the model would either say A00E or A00F.  On every 15" Ivy Bridge rMBP I have managed to test, A00E correlated to Samsung, and A00F correlated to LG, every time.  I can only guess that these are "internal use" model numbers that Apple themselves assigned to the various displays that they use in the manufacture of their computers, and have no bearing on the manufacturer of the display itself: A00E and A00F just happened to be the numbers that Apple assigned to these two displays for their own use.

On models without discrete graphics where the command-line EDID check does not work, you may at least be able to see *some* difference in the model via the ColorSync Utility.  Unfortunately, although different model numbers may be observed here which people might be able to use to correllate different displays to different common problems (e.g., "I've noticed that all of my 13" rMBPs with image retention all show a model of '0BAD' in the ColorSync Utility, while the ones without image retention are largely model '0BAC'"), there is no way that I know of to be able to know for sure who makes a particular display using this method, given that these are just arbitrary Apple model #s.

I'm seeing an A022 for model. Anyone with a samsung display like to confirm what their model is?

No, not necessarily.  Notice that the person who responded to you has a first-generation 15" rMBP (mid-2012 Ivy Bridge), not the new Haswell model.  On the previous generation of 15", there were (AFAICT) only two displays: A00E (Samsung) and A00F (LG).  If you just bought a new rMBP, this A022 could be anything.

Not only did you not specify which generation of rMBP you have, you also failed to note which model you bought: 13", 15" with no discrete GPU, or 15" with discrete GPU.  The 13" and 15" ones will surely both have their own separate set of LCD model #s (a 13" Samsung panel will have a different model # than a 15" Samsung panel, naturally).

We never had any proof that Samsung is making screen for the 13" retina. As far as we know there is only LG.

    Nathan,

    I have a base 15" rmbp late 2013.

I was referring to your 15" quote about unable to use the terminal command, so I forgot to note the 15" base since the quote referred to non-discrete graphics 15".

Apologies for the lack of specifications.

Gotcha.  Since you were responding to someone with a 2012 15", I didn't want to assume that you had a non-discrete 2013 15" even though the discussion had chained off of my post.   I think it's pretty clear that both LCD manufacturers have come out with new or slightly tweaked displays for this next generation of rMBP, so comparing your display's model # to a 2012 machine is apples and oranges.  Whether or not the display manufacturers have actually managed to address any of the common problems from the older displays seems to still be in dispute.

I would imagine that all 2013 15" models, whether non-discrete or discrete, use the same displays.  So the way to figure out what display you have is to observe what A022 maps to on a discrete 15" rMBP with that same display model, by using the command-line technique to get the actual manufacturer's model #.

Good point!  It might be interesting/useful to have owners of 13" rMBPs post what the display model # listed in the ColorSync Utility is for their computer.  (Please specify whether current or previous generation if you post.)  If we see more than one model # for a given generation of 13" rMBP, that won't necessarily tell us who is making the displays, but at least we will know that Apple is probably sourcing from multiple vendors for the 13" model as well.
