Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

No, that's not it.  if you uncheck 'always open folders in tabs instead of new windows' then when you Dclick on a folder in a window, it opens in that same window, not in a new window.  that's the issue.

Hi Tedwardius....Ok...thanks for the answer... For me, it was the tab issue...sometimes it opens in tabs, sometimes in separate windows....., but like you say, always opens in a folder within a folder in the SAME window....

    Same here.

Not having the option to open folders in new windows makes me consider going back to mountain lion.

Drifting slightly off topic, my iPhone and iPod have automatically updated my Apple apps including Pages. I just went to open a Pages file from iCloud and got a message pop up telling me that it would alter the file and to open it on a Mac I would need to update to Mavericks and to the latest version of Pages. I can't update to Mavericks on my work machine until they sort out this Finder window bug (yes, I'm calling it a bug) so now I can't use Pages on my iDevices. It's getting ridiculous. I'm due to update my laptop and was waiting for the new MacBook Pros, but now I'm tempted to go down to PC World instead.

    It's your fault!

So why the **** did you upgrade to ugly iOS 7 in first place

if you don't want non-functional (but still good looking, except for Notes.app) Mavericks on your Mac?

Just kidding ;-) (not about the ugly and non-functional products though)

It IS my fault. I should have got a Samsung like my friends instead of staying loyal with Apple and getting an iPhone 5S.

    Lol

Now I really have to blame you - Samesung stuff is never a solution!

    But of course you could've

    • sticked with your previous iPhone and use elegant and easy to use iOS 6

    • considered buying a Windows phone (solid platform)

    • or try Android flavor - the real experience with a Nexus 4 or 5

Just filed a complaint.  I never do feedback, but this ticked me off enough.  This is a CORE and BASIC functionality that has been around since the dawn of the Mac.  Who was the genius that thought it was a good idea to remove it?  I can't believe audacity and arrogance to at least not provide an option.

phillipboston:  I could not agree more.  It is sheer arrogance.  How does leaving double-click to open a new Finder window harm anyone?  It's great to offer Finder window tabs--but that should be either Command-T or available in a contextual menu after a secondary click.

Of all the dumbing down of the Mac OS that has happened after Snow Leopard, this change is, by far, the most puzzling because there doesn't seem to a downside to leaving the double-click for new Finder windows intact.

Even for people who like and will use tabs a lot, even they have to hold the command key down when double-clicking (after enabling the preference in the Finder).  That's just crazy.

I had hoped that with Tim Cook taking over, this kind of thing wouldn't be happening any more.  Guess I was wrong.

Go to Finder... Preferences... General... Uncheck "open folders in tabs instead of new windows... exit... then hold down the Command Key and just double click and the folder will open up in a new window

That merely states the problem!  A 30-year-old one-handed, intuitive operation is now a forced two handed affair (or selection from a list of menu items) without explanation, without warning, and without any discerable rationale.

It's the needless addition of steps to a simple, well-understood, completely baked-in procedure and I'm completely at a loss why Apple decided to forbid double-clicking to open a folder into a new window.

Exactly. I don't want to have to hold down a button just to do something that has been in the system since it's beginning. I have literally used Macs my entire life and this idiotic change seriously hampers my productivity and downright angers me.

Very, very, very rarely do I get so angry about something of this type but this is simply stupid. Whoever thought this up and whoever approved this change should be fired immediately, as he obviously shows a complete lack of understanding of this system.
