Missing dock icons in Mavericks

Just a few minutes ago, nothing would load in Finder past when it opens to my home folder. I figured I would try a log out and see if that would fix it. It did, but now my dock is showing missing icons. The app is still there, but only Finder, Calendar, and Trash icons are visible. I can still open the app and the light comes on, but no icon. I restarted and that didn't fix anything. Any ideas?

This literally just happened, and I wasn't doing anything unusual.

Hi

I had exactly the same problem but seem to have fixed it... (for now!)

I ran Disk Utility and did a Verify disk on the Mac HD and found that l needed to repair it, which l did by restarting and holding down Cmd + R upon start up and repairing the disk via Disk Utility form there.

Then logged back in and had to physically remove all the icons which where still not showing and replace them one by one from the applications folder. They all seem to be there now but for how long l do not know!!!

Hope this helps 🙂

I have similar problem - icons disappear. Sometime in Launchpad, sometime in dock, Finder, desk... I'm sure it's problem with Finder. When it occures, desk is unresponsive (when i do screenshot or create new folder I see nothing in desktop, but it exist inFinder/Desk - there I see texts without icons). Reboot helps, but problem returns in a while. It's getting irritating.

Some suggestions for all of you:

  1. read Sco1by's post and then repair your hard drive. Don't just verify it, repair it: Boot into your recovery partition (hold down ⌘R at restart until you see the Apple symbol), go to Disk Utility, and repair your hard drive. While you're there, repair permissions too. OSX Tips Using the Recovery HD
  2. This type of problem with macs is usually due to some third-party software that the user has added, usually an "enhancer", "optimizer", "cleaner", "defragmenter", "utility", anti-virus software, or "haxie". Collectively these are known as "crapware". They are notorious for causing problems like this with the GUI. They are unnecessary and harmful. They are popular with recent converts from the windows world. About 99% of the time, when people write in to these forums about symptoms like this, that's the problem.
    1. I'd remove all these apps from your computer. If you can. They can be impossible to remove.
    2. If the problems persist, then the only option is to start over, back up your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean install.
    3. Then resist the temptation to install more crapware.

I had the same problem with some apps in my dock and launchpad (iMovie,iPhoto and iTunes)

I opened finder and then the folder programs.

Then I "copied" the app iMovie from that folder to my launchpad/dock

That fixed the whole problem!

Good luck with it...

Arthur, I suspect you may be correct in many cases, but I think the crapware is partially Mavericks. I have none of the apps that you mention, having long ago migrated to the Apple platform.

I also had none of the buggy behavior before installing Mavericks, and have installed no third party apps since well before the update.

Yet I experience occasional, and seemingly random, dissapearances of some dock icons. Excel, Chrome, okay, they are third party, but are fairly robust and have never had an issue like this before Mavericks.

A temporary fix that worked for me was to log out and make sure to UNCHECK the "Reopen windows when logging back in" option.

The missing icon issue seems to be related to some graphical "magic" that Mavericks is doing when trying to restore all the open apps to their original state. I guess it's not refreshing the icons of the Dock properly, and as a result they are missing.

That being said, having to log out and back in is definitely a pain. The final resolution to the issue will likely have to be done by Apple in a subsequent update.
