I have the same problem. I ended up deleting the message index files and it rebuilt them and mail worked for a day or two but then it started happening again. It seemed to happen when I cut & pasted some text from a website into an email message. When I tried to send the mail it stuck on my outbox. I tried closing email (normal close) and then opening again but after that the crash behavior started up again.
Mail is now useless.

This is the Mountain Lion discussion forum. You need to go to the Mavericks forum.

Well at least you were able to get it to work for a little while I guess.....It's useless for me too. I saw in some other posts people saying ot go in terminal, type some things and then it worked but I don't touch terminal.
I really hope Apple has an update or addresses this soon!

Not sure how that happened since I put in Mavericks but thank you for pointing it out! Will head over there now.

I fixed my mail app crash issue as below
1) Go to ~/Library/Mail/ (By right click at finder and choose "Go to Folder..." then type "~/Library/Mail/"
2) Back up ~/Library/Mail/V2 folder for your mailboxes.
3) Relaunch Mail
4) Sync all your e-mails again
5) If your old mail (only in local) is needed, import your back up mailbox. (Mail->File->Import Mailboxes)
By the way, "defaults delete com.apple.mail ColorQuoterColorList" didn't work out for me.
Have a nice day!!

The Mail update was included see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6030. It fixed the issue I was having with Gmail.
