This is not true.  Taking your MacBook in to an APPLE STORE is the best way to waste your time and money....I've done it at least 4 times with my piece of junk "top of the line" MBP.

This just means that your computer either doesn't recognize the battery or the batttery is bad.

There are several things that could make a bad

    Battery icon appear.

    1) battery is more than 3 years old.

        No more charge cycles left.

( I don't see anything in this case to indicate this is the problem)

    2) damaged battery firmware.

    3) damaged system permissions/.plist files

One way that can bring back regular

Useage is to run a disk repair and check for

Errors. If found, do a repair disk function.

After do a option + command P&R keys while

    Starting up to clear PRAM.

If above fails try an SMC reset.

If this step above fails, you've got a

    hardware issue.

    Hopefully this advice is useful.

I can confirm several people have suddenly

experienced a bad battery icon or broken Bluetooth

Icon when upgrading from one system instead of doing

    clean installs of MacOS.

The way to fix was to do a system disk repair

and in some cases delete the corrupted .plist manually

    and restart.

This forces the OS to write a new clean .plist file.

You really sound like you've got a .plist problem.

I just got done talking to a friend of mine at apple he ran a full diagnostics on my mac and told me its a hardware issue and to call apple but i sadly dont have enough money to even cover shipping costs so im screwed.

In my case, opening my MacBook and dusting it was the solution to the "X" problem. I would have never had imagined that dust could create so many problems.

If your computer is not under warranty, give it a try.

You don't have a Mac store near you ?

    Shut down the computer.

Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Many thanks. Your help saved me a lot of money. it worked.

I spent many weeks trying to fix this exact problem. I tried everything from SMC reset and PRAM reset to all types of tricks just for it to work.

My Solution: I found thay the battery led indicator had oxidised on the inside of the MacBook Pro 13" 2010 and must have been shorting out. All I did was disconnect it and then my charging cable went orange and the battery was recognized And charged up nicely.

    I hope this helps!
