Q: Mavericks seems to break Scanner compatibility.

I can't use my high speed Canon DR2010c scanner after upgrading to Mavericks. It's not being recognized by Image Capture and there are no Canon-supplied TWAIN drivers since (according to Canon) Apple supplies the drivers. The scanner shows up in System Profiler.

According to other posters, Epson scanners are having the same issue.

Help is appreciated.

I use a 2007 iMac with 4 GB RAM and Mavericks (10.9). The 4400F support page showsCanoscan Toolbox 5 and a driver for 10.9. Great I thought!!! I downloaded and installed both. Toolbox doesn't even launch. I have to force quit it. The driver installed but I cant add the scanner in System Prefs-Printers & Scanners, does not show up. Vuescan sees it but will not function. No preview, nothing. Image Capture (my fav app for scanning till this) does not see the scanner at all.  I have sent feedback on the OS X page as well. From what I can see, just about all scanning (HP/Epson/Canon) was disabled after a Mavericks update. I am waiting for someone (Apple or Canon) to step up and fix this.

Installing Mavericks "broke" my Canon MG6120 MFP scanner and my Epson Artisan 810 plug-ins in Photoshop Elements 10.  I was able to use Image Capture successfully with both, and I could also access and work the limited scan functions via the "Printers and Scanners" System Preferences - but I normally scan into Photoshop Elements.  I haven't updated VueScan lately, so didn't try using it.

Both printers functioned fine as printers after the Mavericks install; it is only the scanner integration with Photoshop that was a problem.  The Canon MFP did not show in the Photoshop Import options at all; and while the Epson MFP shows, it does not work there.

I was able to get the Mavericks-compatible scanner driver (with a TWAIN plug-in for Photoshop) for the MFP from the Canon site; after downloading and installing it, the Canon scanner once again showed in Photoshop Elements' Import function.  The driver for that particular scanner  can be downloaded athttp://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mg_s eries/pixma_mg6120#DriversAndSoftware

I am pretty sure the drivers are there for most Canon MFPs and dedicated scanners as well.  Get to the page for your particular scanner or MFP by entering the matrix here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support

One can also download the ICA and CUPS drivers from the support page.  Having done that, Photoshop now once again shows the Canon scanner.

No luck so far for the Artisan 810.  Epson says new drivers should be out "in a few days."

None of my efforts to get newer drivers via Software Update worked - including having trashed the two Epson printer files and trying again to download from Software udate, as suggested elsewhere in these forums.

Just fyi: I have no idea, why your scanner stopped working, but for me it just worked. Canon supports 10.6, but I did use the Canon Lide 500F on 10.7./10.8. and now 10.9. Mavericks (importing via Photoshop CS3) with no problems.

I blundered into a workaround for my Brother WiFi MFC scanner function:

System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > [my mfc] > Scan > Open Scanner

    Voila!

Some of you experts can prehaps tell me why this works when Image Capture (and other software that depends on Image Capture) does not work.  Meanwhile, try this workaround while your manufacturer (are you listening, Brother?) updates its software to full Mavericks compatibility.

So far, this is the only Mavericka problem I have encountered.

Upgraded one of my backup hard drives to Mavericks, so I could test all my programs, and darn! the cannon LIDE 500f wouldn't work, although it could be seen in the system report (but s.r. said hadn't been configured).

So on the advice of others on this forum, I downloaded the trial copy of Vuescan. Worked right away! and faster than the Cannon driver. plus the Vuescan software has options for configuring the buttons etc.

Haven't tried any of that yet, but it seems inevitable will have to buy the software. My only question is whether to buy the regular or the pro (the pro is unlimited upgrades).

PS been using mac exclusively since '88, my house is like a mac museum, have all the powerbooks going back to the first one (stored in my shed). But I still use my 2004, 2007, and 2011 MBP's.

Making CanoScan LIDE500f work with Mavericks OS 10.9.

Found it! a few years ago I had this posting about making LIDE 500f work with Lion.

I just used the same process and it works with Mavericks!

Follow the instructions from Vinz on the link.

To open the dmg you have to right-click and select "open with" install.app.

Some of the instructions come in as some euro language when you are scanning but most remain in English.

I still might get the VueScan because the software is so much more elegant and useful.

But this will hold me for a while....

    let me know please!

I had the same issue with my Canoscan Lide 500F and Mavericks.

Ususally I used to scan in GraphicConverter using TWAIN driver.

After installing Mavericks it was broken. However there is a trick to force the scanner to work again. This is written in the GC manual. The problem is that in Mavericks the GC start in 64-bit mode so I had to start it in 32-bit mode.

    How?

    • In the Finder, click the GraphicConverter program file and call up the information dialog with Command-I by selecting 32-bit mode before you start GraphicConverter.

It's easy and works for me.

Jorge, I really love you my friend

I have spent hours today trying to search for an update of Sane, then install it, and search for info again and again because it wasn't working

my multifunction HP printer was recognized but Mavericks refused to open the scanner

hopefully, your solution with Adobe Acrobat Pro works

    such a relief

thank you so much !!!! you saved my life

The good news is that by downloading updates from Canon (as described in the following link), you can get the scanner working again.  The bad news is that "Image Capture" still won't work until one more problem is fixed.  But Canon's free scanner software will work, and so will third-party apps like Photoshop and Acrobat.

The CanoScan 8800F has the same issue.  Please read this post for a full  explanation including instructions for downloading the needed software updates.

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23758000#23758000

When you get to the part about downloading software, just be sure you're on the right page for your scanner.

The solution for scan with canon p-150 on Maverick, it's very simple. Just turn OFF the autostart under the portable scanner and disconnect and reconnect two usb cable.

Is there not a solution to this issue yet?  Its terribly frustrating and has been going on for months.  I can't find a flatbed scanner that works with Mavericks and Apple cannot recommend one that they know works with Mavericks.

    To All:

Brother software seems to have caught up with the Mavericks issue.

    Before that, the workaround was:

    System Preferences>Printers & Scanners>[your scanner]>Scanner>Open Scanner

That brought up the scanner in Image Capture and all was well.

Sorry, but I can't seem to find a flatbed scanner on the Brother website........
