This has been bugging me also. I've found it can be either on a grouped email (conversation) or even actually in your sent items! Probably linked to a conversation I replied to then deleted and it saved the unread in my sent items after I deleted the inbox message. Go to your sent item and see if there is an unread one on there.

I have exactly the same problem with one phantom email since upgrading to iOS 7. I have done everything including deleting and re-adding my email account and it hasn't fixed it. Arrgh!

My resolution was to create another folder on my webmail, move all emails to that folder so they don't show up as unread emails. I had over 10000,now my inbox is clear on my phone.
It doesn't resolve the issue just makes it less annoying!

I have the exact same issue and although your proposed fix provides a solution, why should any of us go to these lengths to resolve a very simple issue?
Personally I never had this issue in any release prior to 7.
I currently own (or have paid for) a Mac Pro, 3 MacBook Pros and two iPhones. I pay top dollar for premium products. If I wanted to be annoyed by nuances I'd go back to MicroSukk products or even worse, Android!

I have the same problems and do not see any diffierence between a message sent only to me, a message sent to a group or a thread.

I have managed to fix the problem, following a suggestion I saw elsewhere online.
I didn't think I had webmail, because my primary mail account (with the phantom email on it) is through Plusnet, my ISP, rather than bring Yahoo, hotmail, gmail etc. But I realised that my ISP does also store all my emails on a webmail page.
I signed into that, marked all as read, and the phantom email on my iPhone and iPod touch disappeared. This was several days ago and it hasn't come back. I have no idea why this worked - there was no unread email showing on the same account on my MacBook or iPad (which is still running iOS 6) but it did.

All my accounts - Exchange, iCloud and Yahoo have webmail access but none show a single unread message when logging in.That's what's so frustrating to me!

I understand your frustration Steve. Sorry that my suggestion is useless to you. I just thought if better mention it as I'd spent weeks unable to fix it and got lucky with a suggested solution. By the way, my webmail account didn't say it had any unread emails either, but I just marked all as read anyway. I also still have multiple other bugs in my email program after updating to iOS 7, so I'm still not happy myself!

Sorry, I didn't mean to insinuate the solution is useless because it's what we ARE FORCED TO DO! I too mark all messages read in my respective inboxes to no avial. These are unnecessary steps I never had to take prior to iOS 7!
When it comes to time management I look at it this way, When I'm mobile and I see that unread indicator it takes about 60 seconds to open Mail, view messages to see if any are important and go through the process to mark them unread. How many times do I need to repeat this if I don't want to miss a sales opportunity? Every time I see the counter!
If I do it 30 times a day that's 1/16 of my schedule wasted. So my options are don't bother or miss a sale. Either way I lose.

This one seemed to work for me! Thanks!

I did that, but nothing changed at first, but after a few minutes the badge gone.

It seems (at least for my problem) that when this happens, one of your e-mail accounts, Yahoo in my case, has "one in the hopper" so to speak. In other words, an e-mail hasn't been processed, downloaded, and distributed yet, but it's on the way. I thought this might be the case, but when I tried the workaround mentioned above I all but confirmed it.
I had one e-mail unread on the badge, but no unread e-mail. I went in, marked all unread, then marked all read. Then, my e-mail downloaded a new message from Yahoo, but it was already marked as read! This leads me to believe it was there, just not downloaded yet.
I know this does not offer a solution, but I just thought that maybe more information provided would help someone out there find the solution.

Yahoo was also my problem, however if I only had one unread email on the badge I would have been thrilled!
Instead of fighting the issue I deleted Yahoo from my accounts and now use the web app. Not as convenient but I got tired of pulling my hair out!

Everyone greetings. I think I may have gotten lucky and solved this (if not I apologize for getting your hopes up). I used the methods mentioned elsewhere for my yahoo account in this order
- go into mail settings and turn off the mail (mail, contacts, calendars >> accounts >> troublesome account >> switch off mail
- turn off phone and turn back on
- go back into mail settings and turn it back on and let the phone re-load
- Note these first 3 steps fixed nothing but I did them so you can exclude at your own risk :-)
- Load all the email in the account of interest and once loaded mark all as read (you could also do this via
the web client for yahoo but I did it via the phone, took a while to load all the items in my IB but they finally
did load. Still no love after this and I was getting upset
6. This is the big step. preform a hard reset of the phone http://www.wikihow.com/Hard-Reset-an-iPhone
7. After the phone started back up those annoying phantom emails in yahoo were gone.
I hope this helps someone - I've certainly gotten my share of help here over the years.

Possible solution that worked for me. Good Luck!
On your iPad or iPhone: Click Mailboxes in the upper left hand corner. Look to see where the unread mail is marked, select that account. Select Edit in the upper right hand corner, then select Mark All in the lower left. First select Mark as unread and then go back and Mark All as read.
