HT1338 My MacBook Pro (Retina) Freeze up Randomly

    Just to add to the pressure on Apple:  Brand new rMBP A1502 13" supplied with 10.9.0 Mavericks.  Getting the freeze issue even when doing simple web surfing.  Very annoying.  Apple when are you ging to acknowledge this problem?

    Yes, brand new i5 with Iris graphics.  I spoke to Apple who made no comment and just told me to reinstall Mavericks.  Based on what I have read here, that is unlikely to fix the problem.  I have sent feedback, but everyone needs to lobby Apple to get this issue fixed asap.

    I have just bought the new macbook pro retina and am getting the same issue. if it continues im going to take it back. this is ridiculous!!!

    As I experience this often (still after a year!), I'm just curious -- do you guys use Chrome? Could it be realted?

    I had the same problem and since I was to lazy to go to the Apple Store for nearly one year, I tried to fix the problem by trying different software tweaks. Few months ago I did go to the Apple store, they exchanged the mainboard and the problem is gone...

     

    I can only recommend to go to your Apple Store or send it back to Apple. From my experience this is a hardware issue!

    @elado: very good question. I do use chrome with extensions and lots of tabs open. It could be related, chrome always affects the performance. Does anyone use windows 7 x 64 via bootcamp? I bet there are no such issues with win7. I'm just holding on to hope that it's a software issue that can be fixed. I returned 2 laptops back to apple and I really need to decide what computer to buy. Was hoping the new late 2013 line would address all these issues.

     

     

    Also, don't be afraid to go complain to apple. That's what I did. Returned the first machine 2.5 months later, and the second one after 3 weeks. You paid money for it, so don't be afraid to speak up and talk to the manager if you have any issues and they don't do enough to resolve them.

    I've had two freezes on new 13 inch Retina haswell (mavericks). This is crap. I had a haswell MacBook Air for 7 months with no problems (it was stollen). I ran many many apps including Chrome and CS6 on the air perfectly. The MacBook Pro has crashed twice in four days. After seeing this thread there is no way I'll keep it... Plus the scrolling is funny. I'll miss the display, but freezing is unacceptable.

    It seems maybe they are finally addressing a problem that has been there since the first MBPr or they could be separate issues. Either way it's super lame to release the laptops with this issue.

    I used to be afflicted with this same problem, and I think I tracked it down to Google Chrome and/or some plugins. I've switched back to Safari and hardly ever had Chrome running and the crashes and freezes have stopped completely. So if you are affected, stop using Chrome for a while and see if the problem goes away. If you have to use Chrome try disabling plugins that you don't use.

    I got my new macbook pro retina today and it already crashed twice on an 'almost' clean install. Used the exact same software on a macbook air without issues so i'm definitly writing this up to hardware.

     

    As for the people mentioning Chrome; i did not have it running on either occasion. If a browser could freeze your OS Apple would have a serious issue with their OS on their hands. That sort of thing should simply not be possible.

    Macbook pro retina freezes when the GPU heat exceeds 60c for a very long time this is by laptop design.

     

    I knew about the problem long before I brought my Macbook pro retina. Apple cares about the product design more than the hardware structure. I guess you cant have both worlds the design and the performance stability.

     

    I just use my Macbook pro retina for photos and avoid graphic intensive applications and games.

     

    Or  buy a good cooling pad.

    Just sent my new 13" MBP w/retina to the service center. Started crashing randomly every 2 or 3 days then yesterday crashed about 6 times and then would just loop and try constantly to restart. Received the kernal panics and decided it was time for a fix. Took it to the Genius and it would not even power up. Will update when recieved back in about a week time.

    I'd be interested to hear about the outcome Lutzka. My late 2012 MacBook retina pro 15 inch has been freezing and crashing intermittently for some time. It's at the apple store now being fixed. they replaced the logic board but it's still not working. They don't know yet how to fix the issue. Been waiting a week and getting more and more frustrated as I run a small business and am doing an MA, so I need my laptop daily.
