similar problem with my desktop, i mac (3-4 yeas old) running OSx 10.7.5

all was fine, till software update asked if i wanted to install some updates, i said "ok"

it then said i needed to close safari, so i clicked "ok" and it seemed to close safari for me

then when i went to safari (after the update)

ALL I GET IS A WHITE PAGE, WITH A SPINNING RAINBOW CURSOR/MOUSE POINTER

all i can do is force quit,

looking at the report i have now sent to apple (10 times), i see where it says

    Event : hang

(i guess recognizing it got hung up)

no idea what this mavericks stuff is

not even sure if 10.7.5 is snow leopard, or snow monkey.

i tried removing safari, in hopes of reinstallling it, but :

    a) computer wont let me uninstall/delete it, because it is necessary to system

    b) i cant even see where to download safari itself, from apple.

    ***

firefox works at least, but this is frustrating.

i went to teh ap store

tried to download mavericks, whatever, exactly, that is,

it has been "downloading" for about 10 minutes so far,

i guess firefox doesnt know what to do with it,

or the download is stuck/failing, because safari doesnt work,

    what to do?

Maverick is a new operating system. You see 10.7 is lion, 10.8 is mountain lion and maverick is 10.9. I am no sure if you nan download maverick unless you first go to mountain lion. But regardless I cannot go on the internet since I tried to download maverick. It could be a coincidence? But what to do?

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
