Q: Unable to connect to network printer

After installing Mavericks i cannot print anymore on my network printer.

The printer has connected to a Windows XP pc, i see it under settings Windows printer but when i launch a print the printer goes into pause state. The message i see is "unable to connect to printer".

I had this connection since Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion and it has always worked.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Apple developers must have missed testing this functionality in 8 iterations of the DP. This is clearly a major show-stopper. I have this same setup as well and indeed this is broken under Mavericks. As it appears, my guess is it has something to do with the network printing protocol/security between Mavericks and Windows XP. File sharing from Windows XP to Mavericks still works fine and local (hard-wired) printing works fine in Mavericks, too. Thus, not an issue with the printer driver, as any printer shared from Windows XP that used to work in previous OS X (.8, .7, etc.) no longer does its job! I'm glad I have Mavericks in my USB and not in my internal HD!

This is a user-to-user support forum. Apple doesn't normally respond here.

Please enter your issue at www.apple.com/feedback

I have the same issue. Cannot print over wifi to a PCL printer connected via USB to a Win XP computer.

Hope Apple solve and inform about this soon.

Similar problem. Cannot print to HP printers over my network.  Printers are on an Xp machine. Worked just fine under Mountain Lion.  Can print using USB  port.  Spent almost 2 hours on phone with Apple support and tried everything they could think of.  Nothing worked. According to the tech, could be a driver although I'm not convinced.  Will wait to see if HP releases new drivers and will escalate with Apple if HP DOESN't release anything in a few days.  They really seemed to take this seriously, as well they should!

We may be blamed for being early adopters but something this big between two major companies' devices should never happen. I can't see any printers on my office's network anymore. This is causing me many issues right now.

    Andrea,

Thanks for posting the link. I tried what the article said to do but it did not solve the problem. I created the nsmb.conf file as instructed, rebooted, readded the printer but got the same result "unable to connect".

I also tried adding a CIFS connection directly to the printer in the Advanced tab of the Printer Dialog but as long as CIFS// was the server type, the Add button was not active.

So none of that worked. Apple just needs to get this fixed.

Same problem. HP 1012 on an XP machine on local network. Worked fine on last to OS X versions. I can find the printer and add it to my printers list. Printing leads to Unable to Connect and Paused status.

Tried deleting and reloading the printer - no success.

I've got the same problem with my HP3200. I connect to it via an axis usb print server and since Mavericks install it's stopped working. I've tried the reinstall, but now it can't find a suitable driver, so I'm even further backwards..

I still have not heard from Apple regarding the open case I created about this problem...by way of clarification, this problem exists, in my instance, whether I'm trying to print over the wireless or ethernet networks.  I have an HP LJ1200, Photosmart B8350 and C4780, all hosted by an Xp box and all of which had no problems on previous version of OS X over my networks.  (Again, all my printers are fine when connected to the MAC via USB.)I found the following article in the Apple KB which lists printers that are supposed to be supported in Mavericks.   http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669

I am by no means an expert, but given the posts I have been seeing about similar problems, it suggests that this is not a driver problem, but rather a fundamental difference in the way Mavericks handles network printing, but I am sure there are other opinions.

BTW, I can connect to the hard drives on the host machine and move files from the MAC to the Xp box with no problem.  I sure hope Apple fixes this in a hurry, and, the first time!

Same problem here.  I have an HP Color Laserjet 1600 connected to a Windows XP machine.  Worked perfect with several pervious OSX versions.  Now with Mavericks it cannot connect.

As of 10.8, unable to use the network print function. Despite clearing the printers etc. I can't have a printer on a MBP 10.8 or 10.9 and have a MPB running 10.7 print to it. However, if the printer is on the 10.7 MBP there's no problem in printing to it from the 10.8 or 10.9 MBP. It's obviously been broken since 10.8. I'm freezing my other MBP at 10.7 for the next few years...
