Q: Mac Mini problems waking up from sleep mode since new Mavericks.

Hi there,

Since updating my Mac Mini to Mavericks, I have trouble waking up from sleep mode sometimes. It comes up with a black screen and refuses to show anything, although my cursor is visible. Pulling out the HDMI cable does not help at all and I don't have any other monitors plugged in.

Occasionally it might wake back up normally, but if not, I have to just pull the plug.

Does anyone know what to do?

Thanks.

    Debra,

I'm experiencing a similar problem with "Sleep Wake Failures" on my Macbook Air (SSD, mid-2012).  This has only started since I upgrade to Mavericks from 10.8.

    Screen Shot 2013-10-29 at 10.10.30 PM.png

What happens in my case:  I close the lid, which puts it into Suspend mode.  After an unknown period of time, opening the lid doesn't wake up properly.  Instead, it either does a complete restart (I hear that power on "bong" sound" or it comes out of Hibernate mode, where it prompts for a log-on.

I'm noticing a *LOT* of errors from Fantastical and vpnagent in Console.  I think this is unrelated but will try uninstalling them anyway, to see whether it helps.

If it keeps happening, I'm going to restore my backup of Mountain Lion.  This is really annoying.

Same thing for me too. My Mac Mini is a Late 2009 version and it happened everytime its goes to sleep. I have to restart it which partly defeats one of its key points that I hardly ever have to turn it off. Now I always have to restart it.

When I try and awaken it out of sleep mode it just stays on a white screen and no key presses, mouse movement/clicks do anything. All after upgrading to Mavericks. Once restarted it works great until it goes into sleep mode.

    I agree–its really annoying.

    Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks to you both, it's good to know, that I'm not the only one, I was worrying that I had a faulty model - I've only been using Mac since July, and I thought they were pretty much flawless.

I've been poking around on communities and another person managed to get it back to their desktop by entering their password once it goes blank (or pressing enter I guess if you don't have one) - I did that today and my desktop came back as normal. I'm glad it works, but I really hope they release an update soon. My step dad has been having lots of trouble with his Mail since the update.

    Thanks again for the reassurance.

I have iMac mid 2010. I experienced the same problem since I  upgraded my system to Mavericks: when the display goes to sleep it won't wake up again. Mouse click and key press won't wake it up even though the computer itself is on. After turning the computer off and turn it on again I receive a sleep wake failure bug report. I have reported the bug and a system report to Apple through Apple Bug Reporter; I am waiting for their response.

    Hi.

In relation to the issue with your Mac Mini not waking from sleep properly and displaying a blank screen.

I bought my daughter a Mac Mini 2012 for Christmas this year (2013). When I purchased it Mountain Lion was preinstalled. I connected it to a new AOC 2757 monitor turned it on and everything seemed to work perfectly. After a few days I decided to do the upgrade to Mavericks.

The download completed successfully and so did the install however at the end of the installation when the Mac Mini shuts down and restarts automatically there was a problem. When it restarted the screen of the AOC monitor was white with just the mouse pointer visible. The mouse pointer could be moved around the screen but nothing else happened. I gave it some time just in case the installation hadn't fully completed. After about 15 minutes I gave up and cycled the power on the Mac Mini and everything seemed to be ok. The monitor displayed the login screen. For a few days I didn't notice any problems but then I noticed the Airplay icon in the Menu Bar. As this isn't visible on my iMac and Macbook Pro I googled what it was for. Every article made reference to it appearing when Apple TV devices are detected. I do have several Airport Express but no Apple TV's. Out of curiosity I clicked on the Airplay icon in the Menu Bar and it opens up the Display Preferences. In here is an option to 'Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available". I unchecked the option and the Airplay icon disappeared from the Menu Bar. It was after this that every time the Mac Mini was put into or goes into Sleep Mode that the screen once again would be white with only the mouse cursor showing. I had to power cycle the Mac Mini for the monitor to display the login screen again. After a few tests I have observed that if the 'Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" is checked then the Mac Mini and AOC display work correctly and the login screen displays on waking from sleep. If the option is unchecked then the white screen with mouse cursor appears. It is as though the option to 'display mirroring options' in the Menu Bar has an effect on whether or not the Mac Mini communicates correctly with the monitor.

I called Apple tech support about the issue and they said that the Airplay Mirroring option does not just relate to Apple TV but to any display panel. They advised me to try a reinstall of Mavericks or if I was unhappy to take the Mac Mini back to the retailer for a replacement. I don't believe that the Mavericks install is corrupted or that the Mac Mini is faulty so I feel I would be wasting my time doing either of these. I think either Mavericks has a bug or this is just the way that Mavericks is supposed to operate. It just seems strange that an option to display an icon in the Menu Bar has any bearing on the Mac Mini and monitor communicating correctly when waking from sleep.

Have a look at your Menu Bar and if the Airplay icon is missing go into System Preferences and Displays and select the check box. Let me know what happens.

    Thanks.

Sorry to have to say that my Mac Mini has started with the white screen again. So the solution is not what I wrote earlier.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

I have a mid-2013 model Mac Mini.  It’s been working fine with a 4-port USB 3.0 Anker hub which came with a power supply. Recently, however, my Mac Mini would never wake up if I put it to sleep.  It was absolutely impossible to wake up.  I did the usual things, like resetting PRAM and the SMC controller. Nothing worked.  The only thing I could do, if the computer went to sleep and then into a coma, was to pull out the power cord from the Mac Mini and restart.

The only thing that had changed was that I had put in a new USB hub.  I had purchased a new USB 3.0 HooToo hub that had no power supply.   I had put an old power supply from a cell phone on it (it was rated to output 0.5 amps). Pulling out the USB hub while the Mac mini was in a coma did not work, so I did not think that the USB hub was the problem.

I did more reading on forums, and a few forums gave me the solution to my problem. The problem is that a USB hub connected to a Mac requires a lot of power if there are a lot of devices connected to it.  If that USB hub does not have enough power, then for some reason the Mac that the USB hub is connected to will go into a coma.  It simply will not wake up from Sleep.

My older Anker 4-port hub came with a power supply that is rated to output 2.5 amps.  I connected an old Apple ipad charger to my new HooToo USB hub.  This power supply supplies 3.0 amps, and the Mac Mini is now waking up from sleep just fine – and super quickly.  I think that the problem is solved.

I can see that there is a Hootoo hub on Amazon now that sells with a 4-amp charger. The older Hootoo hub that I bought, and which did not come with a charger, is discontinued.

Summary: If you are having problems waking up your Mac or PC from its sleep state, then see if the problem is being caused by your USB hub.  If taking the USB hub off your laptop solves the problem, then look into providing more power to your USB hub.

I experienced sleep/wake failure problem on iMac late 2010 with 10.9.0, 10.9.1, and 10.9.2 pre-release seed. Here is how I could avoid this problem:

go to: system preferences -> energy saver

    then, uncheck all the options:

put hard disks to sleep ...

    wake for network access

    start up automatically ...

this solved the problem for me.

My guess is the first one may be responsible for black screen, and the second one for system restarting itself.

I have a mac mini mid-2010 (mavericks 10.9.2) and I experienced the same issue with dvi connection.

Changing the energy saver option and disable everything, the sleep/wake works again.

It works fine also for me...great suggestion

Same issue here.  Mac mini (late 2013), Mavericks 10.9.2, dvi to monitor, powered USB hub off mini running several peripherals.  I've unchecked the three opitons you mentioned and hopefully that will solve the problem.  How about Enable Power Nap - did you disable it too?

My system is iMac late 2010, so it doesn't have power nap. I forgot to mention that I put "Display sleep" to never; you may want to test that too to see if that makes any difference.

This might be of help to someone. I had the same issue on my Mac Mini. Mac comes back on with spinning beachball on a black screen and can't get back in (mouse is still responsive). To get back in, I turned off the monitor (a AOC) and started to press the back button on and off (don't keep it pressed or you'll do a hard reset - just press it and release it repeatedly.) After three or four presses I heard the Mac make a dull beep. I turned back on the monitor and viola, I was presented with the login screen. Bizarre.
