Q: Update to Mountain Lion 10.8.5 has killed my wifi access. Help needed.

I have a  late 2008 aluminium MacBook. Everything worked fine until I downloaded the update on wifi, restarted, & now I cannot turn my wifi on.

Help please!  I need to use my MacBook tonight.

Id be intersted to see if Mavericks has fixed this issue for users of late 2008 MBPs. I upgraded today and so far so good. I have also done approx 10 restarts without any wifi issues.

this wifi thing has been hanging around for a long time .... I never did reinstall, thought that was bogus fix idea .... I have done the delete and reinstall wifi in net prefs and that seems to work ok, just waste of time .... but my big idea is .....  I just don't restart - I log out and leave it at that ... but that is not right ....

I would like to ask all who have had the problem, and all who have moved to Mavericks .... to please post again your status with Wifi ..... that can help we who have not yet moved to Mav to consider if it fixes the problem, or not, and if not, if you have found that the same 20 different "fixes" are the way to live thru this ....

    thanks ....

I've updated to mavericks and it appears to have resolved the problem on my late 2008 macbook. I have rebooted a few times without any problem. It's still early days but so far the wifi seems to be working perfectly.

My WiFi issue was not fixed by going from 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) to 10.9.0 (Mavericks). Restoring back to a 10.8.4 build and resetting my WiFi setting has fully restored my WiFi.

My next step will be to try a 10.8.4 to 10.9.0 upgrade. I will post with the result.

ejs your first paragraph says it all!

Well I got around to working with my late 2008 Macbook Pro in preparation for Mavericks. The machine was at 10.8.5 (supplemental) and I was still having wifi issues after the 10.8.5 update. As it started with 10.8.5, I had no wifi, I walked away for a while and restared and then I had wifi; I kept it in sleep as opposed to shut down for a while and did a few restarts and wifi seemed to stay.

But I think 10.8.5 put some bad mojo on these machines and I didn't want to take it with me on the way to Mavericks. I reverted (reinstalled) 10.8.0 and of course wifi was good there. I did the upgrade to Mavericks and have done 4 to 5 restarts and shutdowns, and wifi seems to be working fine and has hopefully now become a non-issue.

I did the same thing.  Lost WiFi after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion (10.8.5).  Was working fine on the day of the install, but lost it the next day.  Still have no idea why the cycle to the next day had that effect.

I had the teck at the Genius Bar take it back and am now at 10.8.3, and everything is working fine.  From your response, going to Mavericks from a working configuration seems to work.  Is that correct?

    Thanks.

Still working fine regarding wifi as of today with Mavericks; I'm starting to believe, but still have fingers crossed!

Mine also working after upgrading to Mavericks. Very happy indeed.

Adam, you have a 2011 Macbook so your problem although similiar in descriptiopn,  could be causedto another issue in the code. Most users complaining of this problem are late 2008 macbook pro users.

macLion .... thanks your points ....

how did you revert / reinstall 10.8.0 .....   I'm ok to go Mav but don't want to carry the junk food forward .... a big waste of time unless I can get rid of the wiFi hassle

    thanks ..

I'm going to NOW call the question we all should be asking ---   WHERE is Apple on this ??   Are they running a test case to find out if we will figure it out ourselves after a certain amount of torture, wasted time, energy and money .....   that can be the only reason ....   after all, we are talking the NEW Apple that is sucking for bucks at every corner and not really the supportive partner of it's first life .....

so APPLE ....  I'm calling  you out on this ....   SAY something to all of us who are sitting by for 2 months with non-working software that YOU sent us ....  thanks for nothing !!!

one very irritiated apple guy since 1990 !!!

the OBVIOUS solution  ....    post a linked 10.8.3 over-install with a Mavericks install and we all move up to Mav using that FIX ....   or are you all too busy breaking iPhones ???

Actually the only reason I went back to 10.8.0 was that I still had the installation app from my original purchase of Mountain Lion (the one placed on the computer after download, but before installation). I failed to mention that and I don't think there is anything special about 10.8.0 (except that I had it on hand - have another mac and download takes a quite while). I guess I'm just an early adopter of upgrades and updates and it's been relatively pain free until 10.8.5! I'm sure Apple adjusts the download available in the App Store to reflect the most current version, like any other App Store app; so the current download gives you 10.8.5. I'm sure success would be as easily achieved if one had the OS X install app for 10.8.1, .2, .3, or .4. So applying Mavericks over any of those should remove the issue since (for me and most) didn't exist there.

So I think applying Mavericks over anything to 10.8.4 shouldn't be taking any troublesome wifi code with it that came with 10.8.5. A reinstall of the OS and upgrade to the next does take a while (1+ hour - with all downloads already done), but it does seem to solve the problem for many from comments in the boards.
