Q: I can't sign into iCloud via windows control panel

When I try to log in, I get an error message reading 'you can't sign in because of a server error'.

I'm no computer whizz and this has got me stumped. I've tried turning off firewall, closing all other programs and restarting the computer with no luck :-/

Any help appreciated,

Thanks, Lucy

So - other than upgrading to Windows 8, which isnt an option for most corporate users - has anyone managed to successfully resolve this issue?

It is useless don't waste your time!

Again useless! I tried the whole MAC thing for almost 2 years now and  most everything has just been met with utter frustration! From the  iPhone, to the 2000 dollar airbook that just freezes up every time I  have more than 3 programs running (and it is maxed out with memory)! No  wonder why the PC with all its draw backs still leads the industry.  I  going PC again.......

    Hi,

I followed the solution proposed by someone in 2011.

    I quote:

    "

    ============================================

    Windows 7

    1) Click on Start

    2) Type cmd and press enter

you will see a new window

    3) type "netsh winsock reset"

    4) restart the machine

So I did a search about administrator rights, and came up with following

Start- SEarch: cmd , now instead of pushing straight away enter, right click the search result ( cmd ) on top of the search window and run as administrator. Than the cmd comes up and run the above command/ restart the comp.

It especially works when you couldn't log into iTunes either.

My iCloud now works, I was able to set up photo stream etc etc

    =================================

    This worked fine for me.

    Hope it works for you.

I have been using Apple for years and am musch more frustrated with Windows products - but Apple software comes up with its own frustrations every now and then.

today for whatever reason I can't login to my icloud control panel using Windows 8.1 Preview. It was working perfectly fine for weeks. Nothing has changed, I can still use my appleID on my ios devices and apple's site.

    resetting winsock did nothing.

    what's going on?

I have read through all 15 pages of this post and Googled for months.  Unfortunately I have not yet found a solution.

I am trying to use iCloud (latest) on my Windows 7sp1 (up to date) Professional 64bit.  Unfortunately the control panel login screen pinwheel keeps spinning and never succeeds.   Months of researching on the Internet suggests that the cause is the GPO settings for folder redirection (see below), specifically Application Data.  I have tried a new account on the same computer that does not have this policy applied and was successful logging in.

Does anyone know of a workaround for this?

Please feel free to email me back directly: alan@jefric.com

    Thank you in advance.

its something to do with proxy settings.. if u r accessing internet thru poxy, u need to revisit this part. looks like icloud has some issue using the proxy .. ( or it could also be an issue with the firewall etc..)

Unforrtunately (in my case) it has nothing to do with proxy settings - i have none. It is the GPO for folder redirection as describe in my previous post.  I just upgraded to iTunes 11.1 and iCloud 3.0 and the problem persists.

Is there anyone on this discussion group from Apple who can review my post from Sept 9 12:01 and reproduce the problem in their lab?

Just to add: Some problem iCloud control panel "spins", no login

    Environment:

    • Win 8, iTunes 11.1, iCloud 3.0 fresh install
    • Windows Domain (Win Server 2008 R2)
    • Roaming Profile

    • Works with local user without roaming profile (non administrative)
    • Doesn't work for users with roaming profile
    • iTunes itself including synchronisation to iPad, iPhone works

Has anybody told Apple Support the Problem with Roaming Profiles?

Is it possible to change the roaming path for icloud?

I also had this issue, along with a few variations, including proxy issues. This is all trying to get iCloud control panel 2x and now 3.0 to work in a corporate AD environment on WIndows 7 as an admin on my box.

Here is what I found and my solution, I have reproduced this now twice since the same issues were repeated when I recently upgraded the control panel to 3.0.

    1. Proxy issues

         - My proxy requires authentication and is synched with our corp Active Directory environment. If the password for your proxy is wrong, you type it incorrectly during setup, or your AD account pasword expires and you have to change it, there are two ways to get iCloud to prompt you for your proxy id and password (which in my case is my AD domain acct and password. Our proxy syncs with AD).

         - Stop the BONJOUR service - BONJOUR is the service responsible for the synch and network data retrieval. Once the service is stopped delete the keychain.plist file (located in \AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences/ - it is the file that contains the proxy info) When BONJOUR is restarted it should prompt you.

         - If it does not, uninstall it and re install BONJOUR and iCloud - BONJOUR will install as part of it. See below. Make sure you delete all of the data under the \AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences/

    2. Spinning wheel -

         - All my endless spinnings were, I found out using a network packet sniffer side by side with procmon, were because of iCloud not having the proxy auth right and trying and failing over and over again. Instead of error-ing out though, it just kept trying, over and over and over and over....

    3. Your setup couldn't be started because of an unexpected error. If your click the button to send report, you see the error in the message as "Error: 0x80004005: _Run: Could not remove msgservice"

         - This was after I got the proxy auth to work, it was installed and I had rebooted to complete everything. First startup, it connected to iCloud and had downloaded everything (in my case, it was just the calendar appt's and the contact photos). When it completed it switched to the last stage, said finishing just for a sec and then gave the above error. It gave me the option to retry but thats it. Tried running as admin, tried it many times - but always with this error. Using procmon, I could see everything being written to the temp dir, then the registry updated, then my outlook profile being accessed before the error. This is solved by booting to safe mode with networking and re running the sync.

In order, here is what I did to get it to work

    1. Uninstall everything Apple - BONJOUR, everything.

    2. Delete everything under C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences/

    3. Re install iCloud

3a. Should prompt you for your apple id then prompt you for your proxy id during setup

    4. Type your proxy correctly or make sure you are doing this in a place where you do not need a proxy, like your home WIFI

    5. Reboot when install completed and.....

    6. .....boot to safe mode

    7. Launch iCloud control panel as admin

    8. Sign in, Start Sync

    9. Reboot back to normal Win 7 when done.

    Thanks for the detailed reply.

Unfortunately I am NOT using a proxy.

I simply have a domain joined desktop with Folder Redirection configured for My Documents, AppData and Desktop.  This alone is enough to break iCloud on Windows.

Hopefully Apple will decide at some point to configure one of their servers this way and FIX the problem which is EASILY reproduceable.

    Hi Jefric -

I looked at your post again..... Just wanted to be clear about a couple of things.

When you say the login isnt working - Does that mean that you have completed the instalation at this point? Or is this during the install where it asks you to put in your apple id?

The reason to ask that is that

    • If its during, it would mean that its possible that it cant connect or write to the share where the application data is being redirected, but, my suspicion is that if its in the process of logging in to iCloud, data has already been put in there and its a network something or other issue.

    • If its after the installation has completed and is during the setup, it would mean there is data written to the application data directory and would probably mean that the fact that it is redirected isn't necessarily why its spinning. Data written there is important because means it can find it, that you have rights to it, and the app knows how to access it.

And in general, 'signing in' involves the network more than what is in the application data directory. If it is in the process of signing in that is failing, throw NETMON or WIRESHARK on the desktop and see what its talking to.

If the network capture doesnt show anything of interest, Process Monitor is hopw to look on to what it is doing locally - registry, disk, files, etc.

    Richard
