Q: Quicklook no longer previewing Quicktime videos encoded in ProRes or Animation codec.

I noticed that after upgrading to OS X Mavericks that I am no longer able to quicklook preview (pressing the space bar when selecting a video file) within Finder.

This is a HUGE drawback for me as a video editor because I now have to open videos in VLC in order to quickly preview dailies.

I've noticed this happens specifically with Quicktime MOVs encoded in ProRes422 and Animation.

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

QL under Mavericks does not seem to like the Animation or PNG video codecs at all but I have sample ProRes422HQ files that do play in QL preview depending on the active audio track. (E.g., QL does not seem to like an active AC3 audio track but seems okay with PCM or AAC audio and will play a file containing an active AAC audio track with inactive AC3 audio track.) In short, many of us are still mapping out how QT X and QL function under Mavericks and the new AV Foundation/QT Modernizer routines.

Just tested it out with Quicktime ProRes422HQ and it's working.

Doesn't make any sense that a ProRes422HQ mov works fine but a ProRes422 mov does not...

Any news on this?  As an editor and after effects animator, this really stinks.  Every year, Apple pushes the professionals over to Windows.  I used to look forward to OS X releases, and now I dread them.

This is a serious problem for our company. Anyone found a workable solution? Between this and the final cut debacle, I have spent a very substantial amount of time over the last year trying to figure out how to keep doing my job as Apple pulls the rug out from under us. We were an all final cut and all quicktime shop. Love Mavericks on my laptop for basic everyday stuff, but it's making my professional life pretty annoying.

No solutions yet. It's a huge step backwards.  I really wish there was a single forum where all the video and animation people that have been affected by this would come together to let Apple know.  Because I know they are out there.  Unfortunately, a forum with a 1000 views and 4 replies isn't going to do anything.

It appears that Apple is aware of this and just doesn't seem to care. They look at these unsupported formats as 'legacy codecs'.

My solution has been to just stick with Mountain Lion.
