Audio interface issues with Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 and USB3

I've just bought a new 2013 MacBook Air (1.7GHz i7, 8GB RAM) to use in my home studio.

I've been using a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 USB2 interfacefor the past few months with a late 2009 27" iMac and a mid 2009 MacBook with no problems.

Any audio recorded with the new MacBook Air contains artifacts (popping, clicking, crackling) which is visible in the waveforms (I'm using both Logic Express 9 and Logic Pro X, and the problem also occurs in Audacity). All firmware and software is up to date. Artifacts become more frequent with smaller sample buffers.

I'm assuming this is due to the USB3 ports on the MacBook Air. I've tried using a USB2 hub put the issues persist. Any ideas on how to sort this will be greatly appreciated. I'm baffled as to how this is still an issue, as research has shown that this has been a well documented issue with many USB2 interfaces in the past, and yet I'm unable to find a solution!

Same problem same daw. I finally opened mine up, the Scarlett. The USB jack has come loose from the circuit board . I found a replacement for 3 dollars but it has to be soldered to 4 (I believe) places. Just look at how the other ones are soldered in like the ethernet beside it. I was wondering if I could use the thing just by using an optical or spif to mini dvi or thunderbolt. If you have the same issue and get it fixed please let me know. kurtmoss7@gmail.com Keep Rockin Brother

Just now ran into the same issue with the new iMac (3.5 GHz Intel Core i7). 18i20 works fine for playback but all recorded audio has crackling noise.

This thread has a discussion on the USB 3 backwards compatibility issue which I assume is the root of the problem: http://forums.presonus.com/posts/list/33427.page

The discussion's mostly related to PCs. The interesting part is Intel's acknowledgement of the issue but there's no fix in the works for it.

I will ask Apple about this.

hi,

I am also having the same problem, i have a scarlett 2i2, macbook air 13" topspec 2013

my friend is a sound engineer, i took my set up to the studio his yamaha interface worked smoothly on my laptop, but his interface was externally powered.

it was just my focusrite that wasnt working...

i thought it could be a power issue or not enough power from the usb port..

i also am stuck and now considering buying a new mixer..

i think i will email focusrite of this problem, there must be some kind of firmware update or something for the scarlett, or apply should provide a driver update or intel for the usb ports so they are properly backwards compatible with usb 2.0 products.

glad to know its not only me and also glad that my hardware is not damaged.. i almost cried when i thought my mic or scarlett was broken
