Q: What has been lost in Numbers 3.0 upgrade?

Has anyone got a list of features that has been lost in the new version of Numbers?

 

I am aware (and disappointed) that the useful Categories feature has gone (I have requested this feature back on relevant Apple page). I think I also saw that Print view had disappeared.

 

What else has gone? I make extensive use of filtering and sorting - if those features have been watered down then I think I may not bother updataing.

Here's my updated list. I'd really appreciate it if anyone who knows how to do the things in this list with Version 3 would reply with an explanation. I checked all these reports out as well as I could, but I certainly could have missed something.

Function or feature or issue

 

Reorganize Panel gone, no multi-level sort.

 

Categories View gone

 

References now don’t follow sorted rows as they did before.

 

Table Fills are not supported

 

German user can’t use decimal points from numeric keypad.

 

Split Cells is gone

 

Sheet View seems to be the only view available during editing. Page view only available in the Print dialog.

 

Page Headers and Footers are gone

 

Edit Toolbar (add, delete, rearrange tool icons) is gone.

 

Scatter Charts no longer can accept Dates on X axis

 

Dates can’t be used for X-Axis values in Scatter Charts

 

Custom Formats gone

 

Ability to set margins gone

 

Cell border custom line weight is sometimes lost when using Filter Rows

 

Ability to sort selected rows is gone

 

Header text is used in cell references and you can’t turn this “feature” off

 

Can’t set Page Margins; they default to about 1” all around

 

Formula Bar is gone, replaced by a field at the bottom of the Numbers window in which the expression is displayed but can not be edited

 

Graphics Inspector no longer treats a Table as an Object that can be formatted by the Graphics Inspector tools

 

Comments only display as Tool Tips now, can’t be static displays

 

Can’t open Numbers 08 documents

    As far as I can tell you can find and find and replace via command-F:

     

    find-and-replace.png

     

    Nothing with formulas, though, that I can find.

    Unfortunately that's all I could find, too.

     

    I have a file that originated in a different language and now I need to change dozends of formulas (translate TRUE and FALSE and also change 2013 to 2014).

    Another item for your list.  It used to be possible (in Numbers 09, the only one I had) to select a range of cells and then select "SUM" from the list in the functions button.  That feature has disapeared - now if you click "SUM" it adds the whole column.  If you just want a total for a range, you have to insert a formula (=SUM) and then select your cells or type them in, much slower.

     

    I've reverted to Numbers 09, it does pretty much what I need.  Pity, I would have liked to be able to open the same sheets on my iPad, but the price is too high in terms of lost features, and I am usually using my iMac or Macbook.  I only do simple spreadsheets, no fancy stuff, so if I can't cope with Numbers 3 I don't see many people liking it either.

    Jose, that feature has moved and works a little different now. Took me a while to find out.

     

    Select the cells you want to som up. Then drag SUM from the bottom of the window to where you want it to be placed.

     

    You can als add other functions to that bottom bar like variation etc..

    Hi Badunit,

     

    You solved my question where I looked for the answer almost 2 evenings. With Numbers 3.0 I shifted now from Excel to Numbers and discovering the wonderful world of Numbers.
    Although a lot of stuff is recognizable from Excel, some interesting stuff (for me most of the time formulas) isn't easy to reproduce in Numbers.

     

    I had a lot of problems to write conditions with dates included, finally a archived discussion with your response

    "The condition should be written as ">"&A2", has given me some new light on written formulas in Numbers 3.0.  Thanks-a-lot for your support !

     

    Last but not least a other question to you and other Numbers 3.0 Community fellows: If there already a Numbers 3.0 Userguide or other documents where I can find more information about writing formulas in Numbers 3.0? I found a user guide (See link to pdf) for the older version but this wasn't always a big help to me for the moment.

    Apple hasn't published a new PDF user guide, but they do have a web-based guide for Numbers 3.0 with a link in the Help menu.

    And of course whenever you start inputing a formula in Numbers 3.0 the right pane automatically switches to a formula browser. Lots of explanations and examples in there.

    Thanks, papalapp.  I tried it and it works, and I have to admit, it's actually an improvement!  Pity that Apple did not tell us about it in the help files - or I could not find it anyway,

     

    Doesn't quite compensate for the missing autofill though.  You'd have thought that would be a feature appreciated by iPad users too.

    Jose,

    Auto fill lives. On the desktop, hover over the cell you want to use for fill and a yellow dot appears in the center of the selection box. Drag and enjoy. On iOS tap the selecton box and arrow past the cut/copy/paste to Delete/fill/comment. It will be clear from there.

    Yes- the old version in in an iWork folder in your Applications Folder.

     

    Just junk the new one or it'll keep trying to topen your files.

    Numbers 3 *****. They've dumbend down a usefull xcell alternative into an iPhone app. I thought this was an upgrade, not a downgrade. Thank god it didn't remove numbers 2xx or I would have been screwed.

    Thanks to all for the great responses here. This has been incredibly useful, and has convinced me to put off upgrading (or it seems, downgrading) to iWork 3.0. This will save me a lot of frustration!

     

    I hope that Apple addresses the many, many problems highlighted by its loyal Numbers, Pages and Keynote users. The action Apple has taken in castrating iWork 3.0 and selling loyal users down the river, simply to gain speedy interoperability between Mac OSX and iOS versions is, frankly, abusive and shameful. Unfortunately, it seems with Apple's increasing size and success, come more frequent displays of arrogance and antisocial behaviour towards long-time users.

     

    Apple is not the company I once believed it was, and Mr Cook clearly does not have the grip on the reins of corporate culture that Mr Jobs had.
