Q: iPhone 5s 'This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably...' help?

What is happening here?

 

I keep getting this stupid message even when no charger is plugged in!

 

I'm using the official charger that came with the iphone 5s box. I have other lightning connectors and thought maybe switching them would fix it but it hasn't.

 

Is there something wrong with my 5s? Do I need to clean the port on the bottom of the phone? I've only had the 5s for about a week. I am using official apple chargers.

 

This started happening after my batter drained and I put the phone on charge. Is it a software bug?

 

Any help would be appreciated.

 

P.s. The message ONLY appears when it is not on charge. Which is studpily weird.

    Look, complaining about this doesn't help. I agree it's partially Apple's fault (I am in no way an idiot, or affiliated with apple. You don't have to buy the apple cable. Simply buy an MFI cable.

    It is all Apple´s fault. Since the moment the decided to use a special chip, not to improve functionality, but to enforce accesories manufacturers to pay a Licence, Alea iacta est (the die has been cast)

     

    Had they followed best practices in any Industry, the License would be well used by authorizing Vendors to use Apple Logo, so we customer can decide if to pay more for a certificate accesory, or go after cheaps items.

     

    And of course it is not Apple's responsability if we damage the Iphone with a low quality accesory (It is not either with a certified cable, if it has an original defect)

     

    That is the whole point, we the customer are obligated by Apple to buy only certified cables

     

    I love my freedom more than my Apple's stuffs...few others do not

     

    btw, complaining helps, to liberate anger and let Apple know how unwise was their move.

    I have been using Apple products for a while and have many in my family.  I was a little unnerved by Apple changing the iPhone, iPad connector to lightning, making most of the accessories and cables we have purchased over the years obsolete on one swoop.  This move to intentionally interfere with using perfectly operational charging accessories, such as car chargers and simple USB cables not only indicates lack of respect for the customer, but also complete lack of vision.

     

    We have 4 iPhones and 3 iPads now, but next time we’re buying ANDROID!

    The special chip does improve functionality. Don't believe me? Google it.  Apple knows it's your fault if you use one which is why they don't want you to. they want to possible harm to their device whatsoever.  You can buy adapters from 30 pin to lightning. Also the more advanced and newer androids have different chargers...

    Absolutely, Apple cares so much about My Device’s safety that it just can’t stand a thought of a $2 Lighting - USB cable that has not been covered by Apple licensing fees to contaminate my iPhone with those cheap Asian electrons.

     

    I’m sure that if the manufacturer paid Apple the licensing fee, Apple would feel must better about my device’s safety.

    Here is a work around I have found that helps with my iPhone 5. I was getting the same error message on my phone even using the standard apple cord that came with the phone and plugged into a Mac laptop. Just by trying everything, I came up with this - and it works for me - Take off cover or bumper or anything on your phone. Take a paperclip and open the SIM card slot. Push the SIM card right back in and restart/reboot the phone. Now try using your cord. It works for me.

    I have been having this issue with the error message on my iphone 5 since the ios7 upgrade. Apple sent me a new wall charger and cable and I have only used that since the restore to new I did on my phone to stop this error. The error continued. I don't think this error has anything to do with knock off cables. There is a glitch in ios7 or a glitch in the phone itself. Apple has been very helpful in the numerous phone conversations I have had and they are trying to fix the problem. It is a very annoying problem for those of us that are having it and I hope they get it fixed. I expect them to send me a new phone shortly.

    My phone is a one week old 5s. When I got it it had IOS 7.2 and would give the message but still worked. After update to 7.3 no error message and no cables work except apple. My wife has a year old 5 and IO7 .2 but cables work and error message since updating from 7.1 to 7.2. We don't want to update to 7.3. besides the millions of dollars that could be lost if all iPhones quit accepting third party cables the is another reason this really is a hardship. apple doesn't make combination cables that have multiple tips for multiple devices so loosing the conviance and practicality of having those combo cords really stinks. I recommend sending in requests for the the various nightly news networks to do an investigative story on this. If enough people put in the request it will happen. That is if apple doesn't keep removing post like this.

    Sim doesn't matter and if they pay the licensing fee they'd have to have a better chip on that lightning power

    Wow- how constructive.

     

    This conversation has grown to absurdity. It's like a wealthy snob buying a $300k supercar, then complaint because he can't buy and use cheap knock-off parts for it.

     

    Seriously folks!

     

    And I have a pair of extra-long cables that are 3rd-party, not Apple licensed, that work just fine. They were less than $4 each, shipped.

     

    I have an iphone 5s with iOS 7.03. No issues.

     

    Get over it or sell your iphones and buy something else.

    I have both an Apple cable and a (good quality) 3rd-party cable, which both worked fine (with intermittent warnings on the 3rd-party cable--but dismissable) until the 7.0.3 update.

     

    Since the update, however, NEITHER my Apple cable nor my other cable will charge my iPhone 5 from a Dell PC--it's not even recognized. If I pull the plug from the PC and put it into a Mac the charging starts immediately. So what's up with that?

     

    Has anyone noticed a problem trying to charge off a PC instead of a Mac since the 7.0.3 update?

    I have a genuine cable and a cheaper ebay cable that both stopped working when 7.0.3 was applied to the phone.

     

    get it together apple.
