Q: iPhoto 9.5 dropped Mac-to-Mac sharing?

I just installed the latest OSX Mavericks update and iPhoto '11 9.5 and it appears that the old Mac-to-Mac sharing is gone! I don't see a Sharing tab on Preferences any more and none of our other Macs running iPhoto are listed in the sidebar.

If it's really gone, I wonder what Apple expects people to use instead? iCloud doesn't do the job because it's only the last 1000 photos (at best), so you can't see old photos.

It was a feature. By all means let them know you want it back.

Yes, so it did use to work like iTunes home sharing, wasn't that complex then.

But anyway, I will let them know I want it back

    Thanks!

Unbelievable that this has gone. Used it all the time.

I was hoping for an improvement in this feature. It used to share the "edited" version of a file. Ideally you want to have the option to share "original" + "edits".

Have submitted the feature request. However, iPhoto is really looking dated and clunky. I'm not surprised the upgrade was free. I don't really see much improvement.

So frustrating, why remove this feature?  I was actually hoping they would add the ability to share movies as well, but no.  After all the feedback to the devs (iPhoto Menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback) you'd think they would keep a fairly simple solution.

Oddly, Shared Photostream can now share video.

This ist catastrophic to me. iCloud only sharing is no acceptable way to share huge photolibraries on my local network. I dont understand the decision to cut the old excellent way to share photos between my macs. I'm very disappointed.

Updates und Upgrades should be better than their predececessor and not a step back to less functonality.

    iPhoto R.I.P.

I just discovered after upgrading to the latest version of iPhoto after the upgrade to Mavericks that the iPhoto, Preferences, Sharing menu is gone.  This was one of the primary reasons I used iPhoto, as it allowed for central storage of the entire library with is near 1TB of photos and videos.  The sharing feature allowed for my family home network of Macs to access the central library from anywhere in our home on any Mac through iPhoto sharing using iPhoto as a client on any remote machine.  It seems the only option now for sharing the iPhoto library is through iCloud, which is extremely inefficient for a large central library, and also impractical as time to upload would be extreme, and storage space is limited.  A standard SD Card is 30GB on an 18MP SLR, thus this will be a typical problem for many.  iCloud is great for sharing a limited number of photos, not a full library.

I found this thread online and submitted an iPhoto, Provide iPhoto Feedback with the bulk of this posting.

Seems like several are experiencing the same revelation and issue per the thread.  I thought this was a bug at first but looks like a disabled feature in the latest version of iPhoto.  Please confirm, and if disabled I along with others in the thread and I'm sure many users in general request the feature be re-activated for local network sharing between Macs via the iPhoto client.  In my day to day I was using iCloud for basic sharing, iPhoto for mass central storage on a Mac Mini Server and sharing on the local network with iPhoto clients which worked perfectly, along with access on 2 Apple TV's and several MacBookPro's used by the whole family.

Please confirm if this is a bug or disabled feature.  If the feature is disabled please restore the feature, otherwise I'll have to look for other local network sharing photo apps and solutions, but I would much prefer to maintain a consistent Apple software stack for consistency as these are baked into the Apple set of products.  The analogy is very similar to iTunes, which allows for massive entertainment media libraries to be centrally stored and shared on the local network with other iTunes clients and Apple TV's, the same should be true for massive Photo and Video libraries.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

Can't believe how many changes Apple introduced with Mavericks limiting or breaking previous version's functionality without proper documentation:

    - Apple Mail for gmail accounts no longer working properly

    - iPhoto Mac-Mac lacking sharing capability in local networks (no iCloud sharing)

    - new iMovie lacking functionality of the previous version

    - ...

Why that? Please help providing feedback to Apple.

I have posted feedback. I think library syncing is overkill. Being able to make your whole library availible to family members was super useful though and lead to us making and buying more photo books.

Completely agree with all these comments.  But my primary beef is privacy.

    Send Apple Feedback:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

    This was my feedback:

    ------------------------------------------

    Good morning,

I recently downloaded the new Mavericks OS.  When using iPhoto, I discovered the ability to share information through my network has been removed.  Now, apparently I can only share through Apple's iCloud.

I DON'T WANT MY PHOTOS UPLOADED OR SHARED THROUGH A CLOUD OF ANY KIND.

These are MY photos, not Apple's.  To upload or stream through a cloud is an invasion of my privacy.

Apple seems to highly regard intellectual property in other areas.  I have nothing to hide...but my photos are MY intellectual property.

Please restore "home sharing" as with iTunes.

    Thank you,

    Bob

These are for the previous version of iPhotos. The absence of this specific feature is what we're up in arms about.

Completely agree with this and other posts. Back from holiday an dhave loaded lots of photos on my MBA. Before I could just drag them in to my central library and delete from the MBA. Now I need to load them on an SD card and the load that to my iMac, or manually share them over my home network. Why they just go and remove functionality is beyond me.

It is just unbelivable. There are just two solutions:

    Downgrade

    finding another application.

It seems that Apple do not take care of any feedback.
