Q: I have a question about the Console (was checking for MacKeeper)

I was checking to see that I didn't have MacKeeper installed (I don't think so??). It was suggested on one site to check the Console for a certain string that repeated every 10 seconds or so. I don't have that particular string but I do have the following ( which just goes on and on ):

10/30/13 9:46:09.076 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[166]: (com.hp.help.tocgenerator) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds

Anyone have a clue to what this is and why it keeps repeating? I have noticed since updating to Mavericks that Safari has been  somewhat sluggish ( which is why I was searching and someone online said make sure MacKeeper isn't present; had GLIMS and removed it and it helped a lot but not 100%).

Hiting the 'down' triangle (not seen in the above paste) gives this:

10/30/13 9:46:19.234 PM TOCGenerator[1654]: Error loading /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/SIMBL.bundle/Contents/MacOS/SIMBL:  dlopen(/Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/SIMBL.bundle/Contents/MacOS/SIMBL, 265): no suitable image found.  Did find:

          /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/SIMBL.bundle/Contents/MacOS/SIMBL: mach-o, but wrong architecture

My guess: is it looking for a hp printer????

Anyone have any idea what this is or whether its a bug/ malware/ or just gluing up my machine?

Much appreciate any help in advance ( or suggestions as to a better place to post this question).

Thanks.

You need to get rid of the SIMBL plugin.

To stop TOCGenerator, look in the /Library/LaunchAgents folder for something like com.hp.tocgenerator.plist.

Delete it and restart your Mac.

Barney doesn't the SIMBL.bundle need deleting too?

    More info…

    http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php

    https://code.google.com/p/simbl/

It describes itself as "plugin framework for hacking cocoa applications"

It basically is a way to alter applications that were not designed to be altered, it has caused issues on Macs for years, usually after system upgrades. Lazy hardware manufacturers had a habit of abusing it instead of writing real drivers or apps.

You can use the Finders 'Go Menu > Go to folder' … enter /Library/InputManagers/SIMBL/ and then delete the SIMBL.bundle

All the input managers can probably go too.

There are some old threads too…

    Drew/Barney,

Thanks for the help....I did what you said and 'it' stopped and I now only get this:

10/31/13 5:27:21.706 PM pacemaker[66]: no drift value available, exiting

no more filling up the screen anymore. However, I have a question: I placed the SiMBL bundle on the desktop and tried to look into it....Terminal opended and I saw some script from HP but also a lot of other stuff from other programs. So, is it ok to throw away the entire bundle (folder)???? Will there be adverse effects on other programms (after restart the folder did not 'rebuild/re-appear' the way a plist might. I havn't emptied the trash yet .....do I need other items in that bundle/folder???

    Thanks.....

From the second line, I think SMC is a third party fan controller (or it could just be the buit in system management controller). I suspect you have a fair amount of junk on your system that is conspiring against having a nice experience.

Would you run http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck & post the output here, that way we can point out things to either remove, update or investigate compatibility. Logs can be a bit too verbose at times.

The contents of the SIMBL.bundle can be viewed by using 'Right click > Show package contents…' in Finder, but you don't need it. Drop it onto a USB stick if you are concerned, then delete the original & reboot so it can be unloaded.

So I can delete it? Confused by your statement 'could be system mgmt. ctrler' if I don't need it? Downloaded Etrecheck and heres what it says:

    You actually look pretty clean.

Those may be just normal messages. Do they repeat often?

Slow Safari is somtimes caused by an old Flash plugin. Flash player is up around 11.x, so that plugin may be old.

Usually, you can just go to the Adobe website and download/install the new one. Some have had problems and had to remove the plugin which is in the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder.

Sorry the SIMBL folder is also known as a 'bundle' it's uses special suffix that magically hides the contents (like .app folders).

I wasn't sure if the SMC messages were from the OS (completely normal) or from a tool that is know to cause issues - smcFanControl http://www.eidac.de

It looks like it is normal & I can't see any evidence it is installed in the report.

Here are the parts that I would look into …

Check Kensington's site for the latest version of this trackball driver, update if there is a newer version & look for mentions of Mavericks support.

The two Launch Daemons look OK just check Flash Player is up to date (com.adobe.fspaud.plist) & the same with carbon copy cloner (com.bombich.ccc.plist).

Adobe have another update checker running in your user account (com.adobe.ARM.[...].plist), along with steam.

Open System Preferences & look in Accounts > Login items, see if you really need them on login I don't know what these three do (gfxCard Status, BootChamp, MouseWorks Background), so again look for any new versions.

Repeat with the Pref Panes, they usually have updaters hidden in the settings.

The memory & CPU all look OK to me, but it has only been running for 33 minutes. If you notice it going slow after updating run etrecheck again to see an overview.

    So,

    Thanks again Barney/Drew...

I'll check on what you say....I do keep the system simple/clean.....thanks for looking at my settings.

    Questions (again):

    1. no problem on my part deleting the original SIMBLE folder? (would like both of your opionons)...really looking

for a difinitive answer on this ....if possible...

    2. Whats the best way (I've read on the site) two use/ interpret ETRECHECK?

    3. Would like to give both of you credit for solving my problem..site doesn't allow it (that I know of ...)

4, In answer to Barneys 'repeat often ' question : not sure; was not folloing Console before this......But Console

seems to do/record something every sec. or so....is this normal????

    Thanks....Happy  All Hollows Ween!!!

    1.

I think we are both 100% sure you can delete the SIMBL bundle. It's a third party piece of software.

Wikipedia trys to explain what it does…

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIMBL

I'm not clear on what the answer you are looking for is.

You can delete it, you seem really worried doing this so just back it up to another disk & then delete it you have nothing to lose.

    2. etrecheck usage:

It will start labeling items red if they are getting troublesome (such as high CPU or RAM) only worry about things when you have no explanation for them being high. e.g. Safari with 30 tabs will use lots of RAM, Safari with 2 tabs shouldn't use much.

    3. Dunno about that one.

    4.

Console is chatty, a lot of messages are normal, that is why it's difficult to pick out the abnormal errors. The 'All messages' section is particularly noisy. Even a brand new install creates lots of messages, it's just there so you can backtrack problems, but don't go looking for them that is hypochondria. The system will purge them as they get old.

I think everything else was covered pretty well.

The big things to look for in EtreCheck are the StartupItems, LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, and kernel Extensions. Those are hooked into the system so can cause issues if not well written and up to date. I'm always wary of anything in StartupItems (you don't have any) because Apple told developers to stop using that years ago. If they haven't rewritten their helpers as LaunchAgents or Daemons, I worry about how good the software is in the first place.

The LaunchAgents and Daemons you have aren't known to cause any problems. I don't know about TrackballWorks. It bothers me a little because I don't know why it would need a kernel extension for an input device. There is a whole framework that handles that type of stuff, so writing their own low-level modification seems strange. I don't know how to write code for either, so it's just seems odd to me. As long as it is written well, it shouldn't cause any problems.

You don't need to look for stuff, though. If you are not having problems, there's no reason to look for problems, either in EtreCheck or in the Console.

I've been using this thread to tidy up my machine using EtreCheck - many, many thanks to Barney and Drew for their time and help.

As a consequence, I removed two items from StartUpItems: 2006 and 2007 HP printer stuff. I then restarted the machine and found to my surprise that two additional Kernel Extensions had appeared, thus:

    Kernel Extensions:

              com.seagate.driver.PowSecDriverCore          (5.1.1)

              com.Logitech.Control          Center.HID

              com.sophos.kext.sav          (8.0.14)

Prior to removing the HP stuff, and after several runnings of EtreCheck and restarts, only the sophos entry was present. What could have caused the sudden appearance of these kernel Extensions, particularly as I do not have any Seagate drives? (An old internal HD was a Seagate, but that's been gone for many months.)

The full EtreCheck report is as follows and I would welcome any observations from you experts, please.

    Hardware Information:

              iMac (20-inch, Mid 2007)

The Logitech Control Center Daemon may only install the kext if it detects a Logitech pointing device.

I don't know about the seagate driver, but it also has a LaunchAgent that might be starting up the kext.

    Barney and Drew:

Thanks a lot for your help and the knowledge  you've shared. All seems well now but the learning will remain .....I'll go though this same process if in the future either before or after an upgrade I experience anything 'off'...I'll also look into learning more about using the Console. Thanks!
