Q: Verification code not on my home phone

Confronted with "Enter the verification code sent to (Home Phone #)" there is no indication on my phone that this was ever received, so the only option I have is to enter "CANCEL", but where does that leave me, and do I have iCloud/Keychain coverage or not ?

The verification code has to be sent to a device that is capable of receiving sms messages.  When you want to add a device to iCloud Keychain, an sms message is sent to that device with a 6-digit code.  You must enter the 6-digit code on the device you are trying to add to complete the process.

If it's being sent to a home phone number which can't receive sms messages, you'll have to change the number to a different device by going to the device that you have already set up iCloud Keychain on and going to Settings>iCloud>Account>Number (under Verification Number), tap the number and enter the number of a different device that can receive sms messages.

My iCloud Account Information on my iPhone only shows: Apple ID ( entirely greyed out); an eight digit password; and Description iCloud, so far. No mention of a Verification code.

What I now don't understand is that if a verification code has to be sent to a device that is capable of receiving sms messages, why include an option to send it to a home phone ?  Seems I now have to find a way back to where that option first appeared. Mea Culpa.

Check the bottom of that screen.  If you set up iCloud keychain on the phone you should see a section called Advanced that includes Keychain at the very bottom.  If you tap Keychain the next screen will give you option to change the verification number.

When you first set it up, the prompt says "Enter a phone number that can receive SMS messages.  This can be your own number or the number of someone you trust.  This number will be used to verify your identity when using your iCloud Security Code."  You may have misinterpreted "can be your own number" to mean that it could be your home number.

Sorry, I did not thank you for your previous response.

Thank you for this. I had gone there previously but the Advance item only shows "Approve with Security Code" and the switch is ON, and below  " Allow your iCloud Security Code to set up iCloud Keychain on new devices."

On reflection I'm beginning to think that I obviously missed the significance of the entire iCloud/Keychain exercise initial steps hingeing upon the iPhone and not the iMac.

If you set up iCloud keychain on your Mac first rather than your iPhone, according to Apple's support document (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4644) you should be able to change the verification phone number by going to System Preferences>iCloud and click on Account Details.  (I'm not using iCloud keychain on my Mac yet so I can't verify that.)

Thanks again, randers4, but I appear to have boarded a roundabout. I followed your suggestions only to end up where I'm being asked for the Verification code that was sent to my home phone,( seems to be a clich in the programming not to have caught this at that point.)  with the only option open being 'CANCEL'. When I clicked on the "Don't have access to this phone" again I'm directed to the iCloud Support page - Keychain to begin re-tracing my steps one more time.

Sorry for presenting you with this onerous run around.

You might try canceling iCloud Keychain on your Mac by going to System Preferences>iCloud and unchencing it.  The start over by setting it up on your phone first, the setting it up on your Mac.  When you set it up on your phone be sure to use your iPhone number as the verification number.

Thanks, randers4, that didn't work as I ended up yet again at that home phone # page.

However, when I again referred to the iCloud Support page, fortunately it was still there on my iMac and so I re-read it.  When I reached near the bottom here was the tect that led to the solution:

    • Devices using iOS 7.0.3 or later:
      • Tap Settings > iCloud > Keychain.
      • Tap “Approve with Security Code”.
      • When asked to enter your iCloud Security Code, tap "Forgot Code?"
      • In the next dialog that opens, tap Reset iCloud Keychain. Doing this will replace your iCloud Keychain in the cloud with your iCloud Keychain items on your device.
      • Tap Reset to confirm. Note that you will be asked to create a new iCloud Security Code.

And that did it for me. I'll just have to see whether it works out. I wanted to get back to you first.

Thank you for your persistance and assistance.
