Q: What has happened to Apple?

Okay.  I've been an Apple fan since the beginning, but things are falling apart...  Mavericks is buggy.  Mac Mail hangs ALL OF THE TIME..  I've never had to force quit as much as I do now.  My iPhone/iPad is buggy and iTunes is just going nuts.  If I go to a song, it just starts flipping out and moving to other songs (and it never did that before)...  Sometimes when I end a call, it never ends until I shut down my iPhone and restart it...  And don't get me started on final CutPro X.  I really hope that Apple follows Steve Job's ideas, because since his passing, Apple has not been as reliable and as awesome as it used to be..  Please fix...  I'm using the latest MBP Retina and newest iMac and iPhone.   (I liked the way it was.  I wish I could downgrade)...  Thanks..

Open mail and rebuild the mailbox.  See if that helps.

It's the bottom menu item of "Mail/Mailbox/Rebuild"

A test account won't have a mailbox yet....that's why it probably worked fine.

I agree with the sentiments of many people in this post.  I am starting to wonder if Apple didn't charge for Mavericks because they knew it was sub-standard but still wanted to make the release date?

Steve Jobs may have been a very difficult person to work with but most highly successful bosses at that level are the same way.  I think Apple has a way to fall before it regains the momentum it had when Jobs was still there.

Mavericks does not totally suck, but it is very slow when compared to Mountain Lion.  There's no way to put a positive spin on it.

Also, Apple's direction with regard to virtual technoligies is disappointing and way behind the power curve.

I love Apple products, but I wonder how long they can keep this up?

Drew, Took your advice (to Rotor-Head) after reinstalling Mavericks.  Still crashing...I would appreciate your input so here is the Etresoft report:

I agree with Barney-15E, it looks pretty clean, which doens't help with the crashes.

You should take a look at the logs /Applications/Utilities/Console, it will have a section for diagnostic & crash reports. It's difficult to decipher these messages, but you can look for patterns e.g. lots of crash logs from one application isn't a good sign.

If it continues you could backup & use the recovery partition to reinstall, that should replace the system files & leave your files in place (you might not need the backup - however never update a system without one).

It probably couldn't hurt to repair permissions & verify/ repair the disk before you try reinstalling, also do that from the recovery partition.

Have you even thought this through?

You are saying Apple would sacrifice it's reputation to meet an arbitrary release date.

Now they are the worlds largest computer hardware manufacturer (e.g. millions of users who can update to 10.9) with what appears to be the most successful App store that is used by millions of people daily.

Despite all of this Apple thought they could slip something they 'knew was sub-standard' under the carpet, just to meet a release date?! To help them do this they also made it free and plastered download adverts all over thier store & website just so that more people would install this 'sub-standard product'!

I'm all for highlighing Apples mistakes, but this is a crackpot theory. Take this nonsense to macrumors it has no basis in reality.

The answer is simple revert back whatever, install Mavericks when it has recieved some 'point' updates. You will wonder what on earth the fuss was about, just like 10.8, 10.7, 10.6…

No, you are not forced to use iCloud, or any other cloud, but it is the easiest. You will need a CalDAV and CardDAV server.

OSX Server has them, or you can use any open source servers like this one: http://baikal-server.com

Does that imply another computer running those servers? Inquirinig minds want to know.

My concern is not that the company is changing, but that this will be the new standard for the entire industry. No A8 chip, no degree of thinness, no extravagan material and flashy UI can fix a bad user experience and the consequent word of mouth.

One option is to log into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which stores thata in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

Apple is not the same company without Jobs.  That's a fact.  Yes, I think they released this unpolished version of Mavericks early so they could get it out before the Christmas holiday.

You obviously have not done much reading about the culture within the company.

Go do your reading and you might have a differnet outlook.

Also, I have updated through several new OS/X releases.  I do not remember problems of this magnitude out of any past release.  I don't think what is happening now can compare to anything that has happened in the past.

This is much worse.  It reminds me of something Microsoft would do; more of a business decision than one based upon a genuine concern for the customer experience (like Jobs had).

Russell, you can also consider setting up the Mail account details inside a clean user account. It will cause Mail to pull everything down from the server, if it completes & remains stable you still have the option to do as baltwo suggests to find where the preferences are broken. You will lose the settings & mail that was only stored on the Mac.

Obviously you want to backup before you delete the mail accounts. Another thing to consider is your mail downloads. It's possible for them to contain files that get scanned by Spotlight (as the mail & attachments are re-indexed). If one of those files is corrupt or just plain wrong it could cause Mail to behave badly. Consider emptying the mail downloads folder inside ~/Library/Mail Downloads (or move the contents to an external disk if you want to keep them).

Go do your reading and you might have a differnet outlook.

Please point me to where I can read these 'facts'. Opinion is not the same as fact.

Apple is undeniably different without Steve, they didn't used to be the worlds largest computer manufacturer, now they are. They didn't have more money than God, but now they do (they have literally more money than any religion).

I too have installed every OS X release, and started with using Macs with OS 6, owning my own machines since OS 9. I have been troubleshooting every version in between, including OS X server. Issues come & go, they constantly annoy and then get fixed.

Apple takes many decisions that makes me to want to abandon them. Then I look at the alternatives. Microsoft doesn't come close, Linux can if you spend your life tweaking config files & accept there is no great syncing on to other devices. Nothing integrates as well as OS X & iOS. It's clear that they are still better than the rest. I believe nothing in this world can ever be described as 'perfect', but this OS & hardware are closer than any other system I have seen.

I have been in your position many times (I hated 10.7, iMovie 08 was crippled in comparision to iMovie HD, Apple killed MobileMe/.Mac when I had become dependant on it…).

The simplest advice I have is, revert & stay happy. Give Mavericks 6 months & see if it looks more appealing, there really is no need for you to run Mavericks if you don't want.

Complaining is also fine, I have spent many hours doing so in these very forums, but Apple don't appear to read them & moderators purge them, send feedback if you hope to change Apple /Mavericks.
