Q: Window display issues in Mavericks after wake from sleep

I recently upgraded a late 2012 Mac Mini 2.3 i7 to Mavericks.  I have no complains about the speed of the OS so far, but I am experiencing a strange display issue upon wake from sleep.  If I keep any applications running, and the system goes into sleep mode or power sleep, all of the app windows and desktop folders get compressed to the top left hand corner of the screen.  The top menu bars are hidden off screen, they windows can not be resized, and the windows are spring loaded back to the top corner if you drag them away from this location.

The issue can be remedied by switching between the display settings to refresh the screen, or of course rebooting the system.

Has anyone else experienced this issue on other systems?  Is this a current known bug that the Apple folks will address in an update?

FYI, I also have a 2012 Macbook Air 1.8 i5 that I have experienced this same issue.

Thanks

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that may help after upgrading.

Startup your Mac in Safe Mode

A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.

Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.

Then see if the issue persists.

    Thanks Carolyn,

I just went through the Safe Mode process.  I'll see how the system reacts to sleep in the next few days.

    Hi Carolyn,

Looks like the issue got resolved after the Safe Mode reboot.

    Thanks again!

    Hello, Carolyn

I have the same issue, but the problem isn't solved by rebooting in safe mode.

Maybe I can do something more to fix it ? Any ideas ?

    Thanks.

This was only a temporary fix. The next day it happened again. I should mention that it has happened on both my MacBook Air with no thrid party extensions except for Dropbox and my iMac. It is always Apple applications (Mail, Safari, etc.) that seem to be affected.

I have applications from other parties behaving like this (Vienna).

    Safe Mode - no effect.

    Onyx - neither.

    Hi Carolyn-

Just spent two hours with high level Apple support, with no real solution.  Here is my issue...

    2011 Mac Mini

Connected via HDMI cable to Sony HDTV in living room

Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad for living room

Connected via mini display to HDMI to Samsung HDTV in basement

Long USB cable run to basement for Apple keyboard and mouse

When I upgraded from 10.6.8 to Mavericks, I could no longer hear audio on my Sony HDTV when playing a video file from my Mac Mini (in sound preferences, Sony showed up in the list, but as soon as I clicked on it, it bounced off of it and went to another source; the Samsung in the basement could play audio of same file).

Another problem is the USB to keyboard/mouse no longer works (there is no pointer on the Samsung HDTV and the mouse doesn't work, almost as if there is no power to the keyboard/mouse).

Any suggestions before I have Apple wipe and re-install Mavericks and if that doesn't work, re-install 10.6.8?  The tech had me clear cache and different files in the Library folder, and also had me create a new user to test out...none of that worked.  I updated to Mavericks so that I could have two distinct monitors (vs. mirroring in 10.6.8.), but now I am thinking I made a huge mistake.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    Hello !

Thanks for reply, but it doesn't help me.

    AppleSupport,

Any other ideas ? It's not very cool to close all the windows and re-open it every time computer wakes up...

    Thenks.

BTW, as a workaround I think it's possible to just turn sleep mode off.

I mean display turns into screensaver (or blank) mode and computer keep working.

But in settings "Put computer to sleep" already set to Never...

I have the same problem with my mid 2013 MacBook air running Mavericks.  I have tried the entire advice i.e. safe mode …ect.  I have seen this problem in many MacBook airs.  Most recently my son’s teacher had the same behavior.  Mavericks is a good OS but the freezing has become extremely annoying.  I have up-graded two Mac minis, iMac and three MacBook pros with out any issues.  Only the MacBook air is misbehaving.  Four friends and my son’s teacher are all having the same issue.  Apple please try to fix the OS!!!
