I'm trying to do what should be an insanely simple task--adding page numbers to a document in Pages 5. However, I don't want the page number to appear on the first page, which is simple to do in MS Word. However, Pages 5 seems to have removed the formatting menu in Auto Page. Am I missing something? How does one add and format page numbers in the new Pages?

No, it's gone.  As well as many other useful features, sacrificed to the Apple idea that we should all use io7 iphones to type our novels.

Pages 5 totally disrespects Apple users.  I was so incensed I called them and made them help me reinstall Pages 4.3 which I will use until they ever fix the mess they made.

You can add page numbers in Pages 5 and even start some pages over with 'Page 1'. I changed page numbers for my Table of Contents to i, ii, iii, iv then started my content/body with Page 1. It all worked fine.

Check in the Help for Pages 5 on how to do this.

This is doable, but it is way too hard and not at all intuitive.  I so badly want to use Pages instead of MS Word, but this program is not ready for prime time.  It fails the easiest Mac test:  Is it easier to do in Word or Pages?  If it's easier to do in Word, then the Apple software people have failed.

The instructions are not at all helpful.  I got it to work, but I'm not sure how or that I could replicate my success.  I'm highly disappointed in Pages 5.

    this is not correct.

it is exactly the same way as it was in the previous version of Pages.

1/     in the icon bar, click on the extreme right side Setup

    2/     click on Section tab

3/     cilck anywhere on page 2 in your document

4/     click on Page NumberingStart at:  1

5/     you may need to go back and click anywhere on page 1 and change the page 1 header

    thanks

Thanks so much Azamino! That worked perfectly. The document style my degree requires insists on page 1 having the page number at the bottom of the page and every other page number at the top of the page, so I did exactly what you said and it worked for the tops of the pages. Then I just typed in the one at the bottom footer of page 1 and it did not duplicate on the reamining pages.

Wonderful. This worked. Not the most intuitive way to do it, but still I'm happy I didn't have to resort to MS Word. . . phew. Apple can't clean this up quickly enough. . .

In Pages '09 it was :

click in text > Insert > Page Number

Glad Apple realised how hard that was to find and do and simplified it!
